Or you could go to the shelter and get a dog there. They aren't generally picky eaters and there's no breeder trying to make money off of you.

I like this.great advice.

Our last couple of dogs were rescue dogs as are our three cats. But I decided I wanted a pure bred Aussie as my retirement gift to myself.

The breeder should give you a small bag of food to take the puppy home as you don't want to switch foods immediately. Changing food should be done over a 10-14 day period after the puppy is acclimated to your home. You may have to purchase the recommended food while you search for something more easily obtainable.

There are many wonderful foods available such as Innova, California Natural, Spot's Stew, Canidae, Origen, Evo, and on and on. If you have a good pet product store near you, go shopping and read labels. There is also a lot of good information on the web about dog foods.

Life's Abundance is MLM as is Flint River Ranch. The foods are delived to your door and are not sold in store. That can be convenient and you tend to feed less of the higher quality foods.

Good luck and enjoy that new puppy!!

She does, it's the puppy starter kit from Life Abundance. I'll just do the -mix some of the old and new in the bowl- trick to get the puppy switched over to the new food.

Thanks for the link Dr Doug, it's good to get the perspective of an expert on pet nutrition: Lisa Freeman DVM, PhD (nutrition), DACVN (Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition).

I wonder if we have the same breeder. As part of the health guarantee that our Aussie is covered on under our Breeder's contract, we also have to use either Life's Abundance or Flint River Ranch. I was told that the reason for ordering through her link was so that she could track that we are feeding our aussie the food. Now, I don't know for sure if she is getting a kickback or not, but, Jobe loves his Flint River Ranch food and we are not having any problems with his coat and skin in regards to allergies.

Maybe she is near Dunellion Florida and has a 5 year guarantee. Tho you have to wonder if many people would return their pet dog after a couple of years if it developed a health problem.

Jobe is out of Desert Willow Aussies from New Mexico. When you mentioned the contract and food, it made me wonder if we had the same breeder.

Congrats on your puppy. Aussies are scary smart and they will keep you on your toes. Be prepared to have a lot of people stop and ask about your dog when you have him out in the public. Jobe is a blue merle and we had one person comment to us that he looked like a mix of everything. Too funny.
