Well, the Tailgater worked great with the 211 in the campground last night. But tonight we didn't want to use it, just the receiver and the external drive with some prerecorded shows. But the 211 didn't see the drive at all. Nada. Called Dish and the CS lady said they have had problems with the 211 not recognizing drives that had previously been used with other receivers. I downloaded recordings from both a 612 and a 622 before trying the drive in the 211 for the first time tonight. She said the techies usually come up with an answer in a day or two. Anyone else have this problem, or have an idea?
I think Dish formats with something not recognized by a PC. I just plugged it into my laptop, it saw it, said it was ready to use, yet it didn't show up in My Computer. So I'm stuck.

As I understand it from a friend who is a DISH retailer, each VIP 211 and 211K have soft ware built in that encodes the drive during set up. The 211 is looking for that encoding before it will recognize the drive. Therefore drives are not interchangeable between receivers.

This is correct. I have 2 VIP211 units and tried to swap drives. I was told by customer service reps that i would have to reformat the drive and may or may not lose all recordings

Did you purchase the DVR plan. Yes, it is a program software push, after you pay. Then it will reformat a drive when entered. Another key is that some HD may need external power.

Okay, I'll try to address some of the comments.
It must have an ac powered external drive, and that I have. After activating the USB ports on my three receivers, (Dish waived the fee on request) I connected the drive into a 612. It was recognized and formatted.
I transferred several recordings to the drive. Then connected it to a 622 and transferred some recordings from it. Played a couple back as a test, and that worked.
I think Iryrob is probably correct and tha the 612 and 622 are probably the same internals but for the dual feature. A guess.
I'd be happy to reformat on the 211, but if it isn't recognized, it's
not going to get formatted.
I'll call Dish tonight and see if they have come up with a response yet and get back. Meanwhile, thanks for the responses.

But when going to My Computer, it wasn't there, so couldn't reformat. I will try that again tonight or tomorrow when we settle in at our destination. We're on the road right now.

it didn't see it in my computer, because the drive formatting wasn't recognized. Depending on what OS you are using, you can right click your My computer Icon, select Manage, go to Drive Manager and see it there. At that point, you can format it, after which you will see it in your My computer.
