If you are real clever, avoid the 08s (except for Dodge, whose got other issues) because that is the break year for new rules requiring DPF to fix.

Never buy the first year of a major change in gear or rules.

07 gets you the same deal --- without the headaches.

Our son bought one new in 08. Haven't spoke to him in a while so I'm not sure he still has it. It was on the hook in the 1st month but it sure did pull when it was running right.

My advice is to avoid the 6.4 Ford unless you are a gambler. My experience with my 08 F350 6.4 was not good. As the miles are starting to rack up on these things more and more posts are starting to pop up about problems. There is currently one on the forum about a fuel system failure. On top of that, Ford is getting pretty tight with honoring their warranty in some cases.

It seems like Ford wants to get out of the diesel market.

I mean.... IF they really wanted to sell Diesels they would make them RELIABLE... since they don't really care about their diesel customers based on Fords desire to deny EVERY Diesel warranty claim possible and charge their customers 15k for a new motor.

If Ford wanted to stay in the diesel game they would make a decent Diesel. Right now, you could not PAY me to OWN a modern 6.anything Ford Diesel.

buying new, it would be Cummins or Duramax,... no Powerstroke.

Thanks!

What was it that the knights in The Holy Grail said??

oh yeah,

Run away, Run away.

The one thing to think of is you may take up to a $15000 hit with a kaput fuel system.

My '08 6.4 has been running great now for over 65,000 miles, including a trip to Alaska towing a 14,000 pound 5er....... until recently. It started blowing huge clouds of smoke from the exhaust. Bluish grey smoke, not the typical black diesel exhaust one might see. This happened after going through a regen on the DPF which cost me a 1/4 tank of fuel before the ECM display on the dash said the regen was complete and I could shut down the engine. Dealer said the ECM had to be reflashed. They did so and no more smoke..... until day before yesterday. No warranty issues as all of my service has been by the dealer and I took Ford to heart and haven't played with aftermarket tunes. This is an intermittent issue it seems. Anyway, not to hijack the thread, I would inspect the maintenance records closely and have a really good diesel tech go over the drivetrain with the finest of toothed combs..

Just so I am not hijacking this thread, I will first say that I spend considerable time in an 08 D/A 2500 60K on the truck (all my miles) and other than two warranty issues for the power locks. Not one significant problem, the truck runs like a champ and pulls its max trailer weight with no problems. Its great running truck. MPG is not great.

As to Fords issues with its diesels, What has Ford learned from its last two diesel engines? Where are they currently in marketshare? Lets just say that GM and Dodge could only be so lucky as to sell as many diesel HD trucks as does Ford. Ford has learned that they have some of the most loyal truck owners in the industry, bar none. You give them an inferior product and they will come back for more, even if many are turned off by the latest 6.7 issues with Ford not backing up their warranty, they will still sell and at failures running at about 1% (according the 70 page thread on the topic) its not serious enough to challenge Ford's marketshare to any great degree. They can piss off 10% of 6.7 owners enough for them to buy something else and still have a commanding lead in marketshare.

If Ford can overcome the issues of the 6.0 and the public court battles with Navistar which basically proclaimed to all that the product was a POS, then release the 6.4 and have more if not different problems, there is really no incentive to step up and cover the much fewer issues that are showing up with the 6.7. They can and will turn back warranty requests, and put out substandard products until at some point that it significantly reduces sales. So far it does not appear that is going to be happening anytime soon.
