Greetings all,
I'm a new member who does not currently own an RV, but am interested in a small 19 ft. toy hauler which has fold down twin beds mounted to the side walls in the cargo area.
I understand that most folks would move an atv outside once you reach the final destination, but I'm curious how folks who don't have bedroom areas separate from the cargo area manage to sleep when in transit say across the country. I take a western trip each year and would like to spend some quick shuteye time maybe at a Wal Mart parking lot (I've heard that's allowed).
Also, how does one deal with gas fumes/smell from the toy(s) when trying to sleep in the hauler? If one finds the smell of gas distasteful, especially when trying to sleep, what are the typical solutions? Is there a method to quickly air out the inside area and keep it supplied with fresh air and no gas smell?
Thanks for any ideas.
(if this is an old question on the forum, I apologize. I did a search and came up empty}

First off, typically you will not have any gas smell/fumes, that only happens if you left the gas on or there is some fuel left in the float bowl and it bounces out through the overflow, or you have a leak.
If I were to take a trip like that and sleep in a wallmart I would just open up a couple of windows or vents and be fine with it.

Hey Dave - I don't think that would work the way you describe. On a unit that small, the beds won't fold down unless you unload the toys. Is there a specific floor plan you're looking at?
The fumes aren't that big of a deal. Just keep your toys clean and maintained and you shouldn't get bad fumes.

Could you look into suspending hammocks above the "toy" to sleep in temporarily? Or modifying the rig to have a Happy Jac bed system that you could lower down until it touches the handlebars? You'd need a ladder either way, but it might get the job done.
Can't comment on the fumes issue, as we don't have any toys to haul.

Holly Huffin' Hollis! Drain Bamage!
True story - had a friend with a small one like that some years back. Forgot to shut off the fuel. Also to cap a gas can. Spilled gas all over the floor. After fighting with the wife about who's fault it was, I gave them my Dawn detergent. Cleaned it up as best they could and slept in it that night. After airing out it just had the slightest hint of fuel.
Now this crew was never really right to start ... but maybe a little worse after the fact?
If you don't smell anything and you vent it you might be alright. .

I've done it a few times when not in the desert. Never had an issue with fumes at all.

Most newer toy hauler have the back bunk you could move down over the top of you ATV you could put it in sideways depending on what size it is? If you worried about gas no matter what you do you still have a faint smell of it. So don't drain you gas the more in your tank the less fumes you'll have. There are air vents on the lower back sides of toy hauler you can open up to vent it with fresh air. Don't forget to turn off you gas! Over night camping just look for any signs the say this parking lot is closed from 10 pm to 8 am or prohibit overnight stays. There's a lot of large parking lots you can stay in that aren't posted at all like some school parking lots. Or a large post office parking lot. I'm sure others here will point you in the right direction. I own a 19" Ft toy hauler.

I have overnighted with the Beemer in the trailer. We cannot use the side beds but do drop the queen bed down over the bike to sleep. Difficulty is in locating the ladder for accessing the bed. If I plan ahead I park the bike off center to make room for bed access.
Even if you are on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

Depending on the size of the toy(s) and the space available, you may be able to load the cargo over to one side enough to allow one of the side wall beds to drop down.
Before you load your toys, run the motors with the gas tank valves shut off and run them until they starve out and die. That ensures you have no gas in the carb to vent fumes into the trailer. As long as your gas caps don't leak, and you keep your fuel jugs sealed up, all should be well and no fumes inside the trailer. That is how I store my bikes and gas jugs inside the garage and I don't get any gas smell in the garage.
