WA State used to charge an 'exise tax' on it's vehicle registration, but it was also pro-rated for the age of the vehicle... At that time, I always had old vehicles, so it was not so bad.. But $800 tags was not uncommon. And that was probably 10 years ago..

"The People" (Actually Tim Eyman) pushed an Inititive thru to cut the vehicle registration fees. It was passed by voters by a large amount!

I pay about $90 for my F150. I do pay an extra $30 for my State Park license plates (96th one stamped out BTW )

Olympia has been crying about the lack of money because of it and our roads HAVE suffured because of it and we are now being tolled on a couple of our bridges and will likely see more tolls on the roadways in the future, but that's fine with me... If I use it, I'll pay a toll.. I've got my Good To Go sticker, so I'm good...

Trailer was around $40 I think it was... My little utility trailer was around $30..

California passed "Prop 13" in 1975 - a constitutional amendment just like your amendment to restrict our property tax to only 1% of the property's "Value" and value increases each year are restricted to a maximum of only 2% per year, unless voters approve a special assessment by a 66% majority. So there might be a couple of small add on items, such as special funding for a new school bond, or fire department bond, or to pay for flood mitigation or water district fees that have been passed by the voters. Howard Jarvis is gone now, but his concepts live on.

I like Washington's amendment that says vehicle license fees will be $70 until the voters approve a increase, and that does not look like it will happen anytime soon. Any chance that Tim will want to move to California? And do the same thing here? They sure are giving a un-even tax to those who decide to drive a motorhome or other expensive vehicle, while not taxing those who drive older cars nearly as much.

Jay Leno must pay a very hefty fee for his $10,000,000 Rolls Royce and other expensive cars, or does he just use dealer plates and not have each one registered for use each year? No wonder he wanted the Govenator to pass the law reducing the DMV fees as the first thing he did once the Governor, yet Arnold let us all down by allowing the fees to go back up before leaving office.

It's to bad that the politicians are allowed to vote themselves huge increases, and do not try to run a very lean government anymore. Back in the 1950's, it was not known to be a good job, working for the underpaid government, but that changed at some point, and now there are a bunch of lazy and overpaid people working there, expanding the number of "Chiefs" while the workers out on the road actually making repairs to the roads are decreasing.

A lot of people want to run for Governor, why not make it a $50,000 a year job with health benefits, and keep lowering the pay until nobody wants to run for that office anymore? They do get a "Free" mansion to live in while Governor, and other benefits. I really don't think they have to pay the electric bill, security or grounds keeping at the Governors mansion.

Same thing with other elected offices, keep lowering the pay until they don't have anyone willing to accept the job. Most people who run for that office are not in it for the money.

Our TT(2010 yr model) tag was $15. Tax will be a just a little over $100. F250(2010 yr model) tags are weighted tags, depends on what weight you are at. Ours was just over $100. Normal car tags are $28. The tax on the truck was less than $150 last year I believe. Our little Yaris (2007) model is in the $60 range for tax and the tag was $28 I think. Here in NC it all depends where you live at. We don't live in any city limits and only the county. Ours are much lower than others. Head south to Charlotte/Mecklenburg and expect to pay much much more.

Excise/Personal Property Taxes irk me especially when you pay a tax when you purchase the item. If they didn't do that I wouldn't complain so much. Registration fees should be based on vehicle weight and used for road maintenance. In WV I pay personal property tax, based on the blue book value of the vehicle, on a 2002 GMC Envoy, 2005 Carriage Cameo fiver and 2008 Ford F450. Last year's tax $693. Registration $170/yr truck based on total registered GVW. Trailer $39/3yrs. GMC $30/yr.

In SC, my new sticker is due next month. Bill is $404 on a 2005 5vr still valued in the $17k range according to state revenue department. I recently tried to trade it in for a popup, dealer wanted no part of trading down and what they offered as trade in was no where near $17k. Now I see why 1-2 year old $40k trailers are for sale by owner on craiglist around here for 10-12k.
The bad thing about Sc is, when the state revenue department lowers the value of vehicle each year, the local county you pay property tax to just increases the millage rate to offset the lower value, so each year you may see a few dollars decrease in tax bill. Takes about 15 years to get it to a low amount...

You'd be further ahead to move to the "Land of Taxes", New York State. You'd save money.

I just renewed my MH and toad last week here in WA. The 2005 Class C was $116.75 and the 2009 smart was $48.75.

Yes, you pay the sales/use tax up front just once - but you don't get bled for in excise tax year after year anymore.

This comes from a former Manchester, NH resident where you pay the excise tax to the city/town you live in, and the registration fee to the state (you write 2 checks and give them to the city/town clerk when you renew)

In Minnesota we pay a yearly registration fee/tax based on weight for trailers and motorhomes. The cost is the same no matter the age of the vehicle.

For my motorhome in the 28,000 lb GVW and under class I pay around $275 a year. There is no property tax on vehicles in Minnesota.

Well, let's see...
The Tioga (see sig): $0
The truck (see sig): $0
They are both over 10 years old, and have PERMANENT registration.
The boat (1969 17 foot Bell boy): $0 (all boats are permanently registered)
The boat trailer: $0
the flatbed trailer: $0
the horse trailer: $0
If I buy the fifth wheel trailer: one time registration fee, about $200, then $0 as long as I own it.
ALL trailers, regardless of size or type, PERMANENT registration.
The Wrangler Rubicon, abut $200/year until 2016, then permanent registration as soon as it is 10 years old.
the Grand Cherokee, same thing but only until 2015.
Oh, yeah, all motorcycles are also permanently registered (that includes ATVs licensed for on-road use).

I love SC, the actual DMV costs for license plates are not too expensive but it is the property tax that you pay EVERY YEAR before you can get you license plate. Mine is just under $4000 per year with an assessed book value of $180,000. In 15 years before it drops to a reasonable rate I will have paid approximately $60,000 in property tax.
