I agree about the Corn Palace----bust- I think a 6yo would LOVE Wall Drug but if you are only going to the Wall area for Wall Drug, I think there are some much better sites in the Hills to occupy your time, if you go to Wall go through the Bad Lands, incredible. Neddles Hwy is a great ride and Sylvan Lake and Harney Peak is a great spot but the hike may be a little much. Hill City is very nice and a 6yo would love the museum. Its prime time so reserve your sites early.

Based on what my five and seven year old boys enjoyed, I recommend the following.
Bear Country and Reptile Gardens, Custer State Park, the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, Rushmore Alpine Slide, and the Circle B Ranch chuckwagon dinner show.

These spots are what we're leaning toward. That and maybe the mine trip recommended earlier. I'll get to checking on all of the suggestions thus far. Thank you guys so much for the thoughtful responses.

Spot on for young kids. x20 for skipping the Corn Palace and Wall Drug.

If you don't have one already, I recommend getting a kid carrier pack for the 6MO, something like this:

We had one and used it with both of our kids. It was well worth the investment. Ours was a simple one without any extra pockets or storage compartments. That made it light and easy to deal with. The DW carried a backpack with the essentials.

Enjoy your trip!

We stayed at the Mt. Rushmore KOA and would recommend that site to anyone with kids. We will go back. Like it was mentioned earlier my kids hardly wanted to leave. I'm not sure if it's been mentioned but one of my kids favorite was the Cosmos. My kids are really into science and they loved the crazy optical and gravitational illusions there.

We were at Mt. Rushmaore in late September and it was so overcrowded. I would think that it will be worse during the summer. Lots of people love it but it just was not for us.
And we both taught history.
Perhaps it was on a weekend to explain the overcrowding.
