So, brother borrowed my FW this weekend to get some FW experience. My Greenball Towmaster E-rated tires I knew were on their last legs so told him to take it very easy on them. Successful trip, but the tires have started to shed pieces of rubber, showing the steel belting. Given they've been on since 2007, I knew I was on borrowed time. So, off to Discount Tire he goes after doing some research. He spent a goodly amount of time talking to an Ass't. Manager there and after some back-and-forth, I'm taking a gamble and putting on a set of Carlisles. Now I know what most of you are going to say already, and I myself have said a lot of it but, according to Discount, these are newly developed tires with a whopping R speed rating, though I don't think I'll ever tow at 106 mph, which these ST's are rated at. After Carlisle came to Discount with these tires, DT supposedly did their own testing on them tires and are highly recommending them, even over Maxxis. Several of the DT staff said they either were running these on their trailers now, or were planning on putting them on when they needed new tires. They are putting their rep on the line with these tires, if what we've been told is correct. You seemed to have fairly good luck with the Green Ball, no reason you wouldn't get lucky again with Carlisle. Not particularly surprising that a dealer would "highly recommend" the brand they sell over brands they do not sell though. i'm betting that 99% of dealers would make the same recommendations for THEIR brand.

I am really impressed they told you all the same things they told me back in 2002, at least they are consistent.

DT does sell Maxxis, but not as a normally stocked item, which does surprise me a bit. They also said that their experience with them, especially given their price, was only average and, given a $200+ price difference on a set of 4 tires, the advertised R speed rating on the Carlisles, and several employees' willingness to use them, I'm willing to take a chance.
I watched my father-in-laws' brand new "Made in USA" Carlisle's literally fall apart in less than 4000 miles. Returned to tire shop, who returned to wholesaler, who returned to Carlisle, and got barely anything back. Father-in-law is a stickler for pressures, so I know they were installed and maintained properly. Carlisle has a long history of junk tires, and they are another one of those companies run by MBA's and bean counters. Their three strikes were up long ago. IMHO.

I threw 4 of those carlisles on my new to me 5th in january and headed to calif. from fl. No issues, and good thing they have that speed rating as I hit 75 twice. It was a huge change coming from a class A to a truck. Of course now that the forum hex throwers have cursed them, I probably wont get 15 more feet.
I dont know if I believe that rating, but if so that means they dont get hot. And that means way less heat blowouts.
Hey, maybe they did go back to the drawing board. Lyle keep us posted on how things are going both good and bad as you get miles on them. Right now, there are so few choices in ST tires that I'm hoping you have great luck.

OK - that made me burst out laughing Sometimes there is a lot of truth in jest!
I'm all for it if they have come up with a good tire. I just wonder if the salesman's experience is based on these heavy fivers or just his experience with boat trailers and ATV trailers.
