We were very disappointed when the state park that was going into our county got postponed due to state budget cuts. Would love to have one 15 miles from home.

We have a really nice locality owned campground about 7 Mins away. Its on a mountain and we can see our house (with binoculars) but it is a great weekend get-away.

We have a lake approx 30 minutes away we camp at a couple times a year with a few friends. But most of the time we are at least 3-4 hours from home.

With so many good state parks within an hours drive of here, I would say none of them are too close to home. It is all about getting away from the house and relaxing. It is nice to get away and not even use 1/4 tank of fuel.

We are about 10 miles from home at a state park right now.
Wife fishes all day and night.
Just wanted to get out for a couple days at the last minute.
Beats sitting around the house.
It's not $38 a night though.

I've camped 10 minutes from home at a county park. Problem is the campground was placed by a busy road and you do hear the road noise. There are other campgrounds 30 to 90 minutes away we prefer and camp at them several times per year. As others have said, it is the experience and not the distance that counts.

We've gone as close as 15 miles just for a weekend. You are away from home, nobody else know where you are, shut off the phones = peace. Pretty soon I will be breaking out the tent and my son and I will be camping in the backyard.

It's not too close if they are enjoying it. There are no rules for camping that fit all. If the campground was super nice I would stay close by. We just don't have any that close.
I don't think I enjoy camping more just because it took me several hours or longer to get there. lol

To me, it’s not so much distance as suitability of the spot for “camping”. No commercial campgrounds qualify, likewise no public campgrounds that are near the city, well developed and busy. So that pretty well eliminates anything anywhere near home base. The closest I’ve camped to home was about 75 miles, but that was a hunting trip. Otherwise, the norm is probably a minimum of 130 miles, what it takes to get into the mountains. I can understand someone, though, who might stay somewhere I’d consider untenable if camping wasn’t the goal, another activity, like fishing was the reason to be there.
