I'm happy to hear this. I'm still contemplating if our next rig will be a 3v V10 or if we'll finally make the jump to diesel.

As for the shift points I'd recommend calling up www.5startuning.com I got my tune from them and there is so much they can do for different applications. I found them from a ford truck forum that I frequent.

So they have engine braking on the gasser? I didn't know that.

The Tow/Haul feature keeps the transmission locked up when engaged and you apply the brake which provides the engine braking effect. It is very effective.

Very good report on your set up and experience coming from the Ford diesel. I am glad to hear that the 6.2 is performing so well. Once you get used to the engine spinning up, it doesnt bother you anymore. I know as well because I also have pulled with both. Funny thing is that diesels run close to there max redline as well when needed, so I dont sweat it anymore. Doesnt the 6.2 also come with 4.30 gears or close thereabouts? I wonder if that would keep it in 3rd longer? Anyway glad to hear of your report, I will pass it along to a coworker who is selling his 6.0 Ford and looking at the 6.2 as its replacement. After the money he has been throwing into that money pit, he is at his ends wits with that truck. Yes the truck was stock, however it just never stopped breaking...sadly most of the time while he was trying to camp...

I think you'll find that your dealer is going to tell you to use the SelectShift mode to keep it from going into 2nd. I have a 10 F150 6sp and no Select shift mode (came out in 2011) and would love to have it. If you got it, use it.

Great review. I love the idea of the power of the newer diesels but the higher purchase price and fuel cost make an impact. If we're still pulling the 10k rig we have now without plans to go post 12k gas is on the table. For now (knock knock on wood) the 7.3 Ford is pulling strong.

Thanks for the detailed report!!!

Tow/haul and manual 5 should do it for your combo.

I have the same engine and axle setup in a 2011 model year. I agree with the OP review, although my mpg is a bit less. This 6.2 engine and transmission package is very capable. my tow weight for the trailer is about 10,500 loaded. I do feel the transmission control module could use a bit of a retune. It can be overaggressive to downshift for power and slow to upshift. I found turning 5000 rpm in second gear should permit an upshift as the engine has adequate power at the few hundred less rpm's the upshift would bring. It also downshifts when you hit the brakes which is a big help, but, again seems a bit too much at times. Down to first gear with the engine screaming is not only unnecessary but a bit harsh in the wear and tear of a drivetrain. All this is in the tow haul mode of the trans. there is a manual shift mode which coud be used but that shouldn't be needed. I know others will say I am wrong, unrealistic, and so forth. These are my feelings as an auto mechanic with over 35 years in the field. You may find your results differ based on tow weight and driving habits and the like.

5000 RPM up a 4 degree grade.... brings back memories. No thanks I'll stick with 1800. Great report though.

Nice report!

5000 RPM x 2.318 (2nd gear trans ratio) x 3.73 rear axle = 55 mph
(with stock 275/65/18 tires)

5000 RPM x 2.317 x 4.30 = 47 mph

6 speed ratios-
3.97 low
2.32 2nd
1.52 3rd
1.15 4th
0.86 5th
0.67 6th
3.13 rev

400 lb-ft x 2.32 x 3.73 = 3461 lb-ft at the rear wheels.
400 lb-ft x 2.32 x 4.30 = 3990 lb-ft at the rear wheels.
400 lb-ft x 2.32 x 4.88 = 4529 lb-ft at the rear wheels.

400 lb-ft x 1.52 x 3.73 = 2268 lb-ft at the rear wheels.
400 lb-ft x 1.52 x 4.30 = 2614 lb-ft at the rear wheels.
400 lb-ft x 1.52 x 4.88 = 2967 lb-ft at the rear wheels.

400 lb-ft x 1.15 x 3.73 = 1716 lb-ft at the rear wheels.
400 lb-ft x 1.15 x 4.30 = 1978 lb-ft at the rear wheels.
400 lb-ft x 1.15 x 4.88 = 2244 lb-ft at the rear wheels.

400 lb-ft x 0.86 x 3.73 = 1283 lb-ft at the rear wheels.
400 lb-ft x 0.86 x 4.30 = 1479 lb-ft at the rear wheels.
400 lb-ft x 0.86 x 4.88 = 1679 lb-ft at the rear wheels.

400 lb-ft x 0.67 x 3.73 = 1000 lb-ft at the rear wheels.
400 lb-ft x 0.67 x 4.30 = 1152 lb-ft at the rear wheels.
400 lb-ft x 0.67 x 4.88 = 1308 lb-ft at the rear wheels.

I included the 4.88 ratio because once Ford starts offering the 6.2 in the F450/550 trucks, it will likely come with the 4.88 ratio. Pulling the same load, those trucks will be one gear higher in the transmission with the 4.88's versus the 3.73's.

I'd like to see them offer the F350DRW with the 6.2 and 4.88's. That would eliminate the need for the diesel for just about anything the F350 chassis is capable of pulling.
