This morning before work I let Bud out in the main part of the yard because the backyard was muddy. Lightning and thunder must of scared him because he took off. I was driving the neighborhood when I received a call from a convenience store about 9 blocks away. Bud never leaves the yard but is terrified of thunder. Lesson learned and I'm VERY grateful to get him back and a big thanks for the folks who took time to call me.

Really scary. Megan in her youth was a runner. It took years to break her of the habit (she was 8 month old when we got her and had never been trained to come). Our first camping trip she bolted out of the door as I was exiting to register (9 pm at nite) and thought it was great to play run and chase. I just saw her disappearing into the woods never to be seen again...

That fight or flight instinct really takes over when they are scared.

Kodi and Ursa are now on high alert for the wildlife in our area. Elk stroll through the yard daily. Lynx chasing snowshoe rabbits through the yard. Squirrels moving about everywhere. So, we're being overly cautious and ensuring they are leashed outside the fenced area.

I wonder though ... do the wolves look at our dogs and think, "Dopes on a rope?"

Many dogs & cats in this area become snacks for the wolves & coyotes. At only 50 lbs Kodi is an easy target for the wolves. Ursa's 90 lbs gives her a bit more advantage, but she's still vulnerable to two 150 lb wolves who live in our area.

I'll never forget the time Willow ran away. It was back in June '97. My mom was visiting, and we went shopping to prepare for our big Alaska trip. The skies were clear, and the weather was mild, so I left Max and Willow in the yard with the door into the house locked. While we were gone, a sudden thunderstorm came through, Willow got scared and jumped the fence. I drove through the neighborhood but couldn't find her. To make things worse, her ID tag had recently fallen off. I went to bed that night, but couldn't sleep much, and thought seriously about cancelling the trip. My mom didn't help by suggesting she might have been "dog-napped". The following morning, I got a call from a person several miles away. He had spotted the 11-year-old greyhound running along the road 4 miles from my house, and had coaxed her into his car. He had to wait until the morning to call my vet and use the rabies tag number to trace me. We all had a happy reunion and a great trip, and I learned my lesson. Never again have I locked out the dogs while I'm gone, no matter what the weather.

So glad you got Bud back.

I know those heart-stopping moments rather well - Ike was scared of a LOT of things as a youngster and his first instinct was to run.

Ironically, because he loves to go ANYWHERE in the car with me - the easiest way to coax him out of hiding (often, he was only 100 yds away in the woods) was to call "Let's go, Ike! Get in the car!" To him, the car was his safe haven and it always brought him running TOWARDS me :-)

Bet that was scary, Im always worried Dudley is going to do that. Only I think he would chase after a bird or rabbit, and than get lost after all the fun was over....Happy to hear you got Bud back home, safe and sound.

He has a tendency of hanging around me when he's scared, or hiding behind furniture so I don't know if he would run like that or not.

Don't want to find out............

So glad Bud is back home! Years ago DH's neice and kids stayed a few days at our house. They left while we were at work, leaving the doors wide opened. (Hard to imagine) We came home to no Maggie. We searched the entire night and were sitting at the kitchen table trying to decide how to tell the kids that we didn't find her when we heard her scratching at the door. She came in smelling horribly, and ran in and jumped on our son's bed. We always called it Maggie's prom night.

Oh, I though of another one.

How could I forget. Our last trip to St. Louis to visit family, after about a 6 hour drive Jill charged out the door around Sandy when we arrived at the campground. If this had happened two or even 1 year ago she would have been gone for good. Being the flight risk that she was from day 1, I've worked with her enough that she'll reluctantly come to me (that took at least a year and a half) when I bend down and pat my thigh. We were both panicked for about 30 seconds though...

Sure glad the store cared, and kept him safe, and called you. Talk about scary. Glad there was a happy ending, and Bud is ok.

I think you found a new store to patronize, a lot.
