Does anyone know if you need to remove the sway bars on the Equil-i-zer hitch before backing? I have been told you don't.

No need to, but you will hear a little clanking while doing so, but no major problem, just the bars adjusting.

Nope. Nothing in the manual about it. They will make some noise, especially if new or wet. Some people remove them because of the noise.

When new, mine made so much noise that I removed the bars before backing into campsite - as a courtesy to my fellow campers. Now that they are "broken in", I usually just back in without any significant noise.

I would still remove them if I had to make a very sharp turn (jack-knife) in order to get in the site.

My sway bars are my weight distribution bars and I have never taken them off to back up. If just moving around the yard etc I have not put them on. Do some equal-i-zer hitches have both sway and different weight distribution bars?

I JUST bought an Equalizer so I DON'T have to do that. On my Husky hitch I DID. I'm obsessed with eliminating "steps" in the in/out process of camping, especially on 2 day or shorter trips.
