My family and I (DH, DS and I) are fortunate enough to be able to take a two month camping trip this summer. My route is as follows and I have indicated areas of where I need help on particularly Wisconsin and Michigan. Please fee free to suggest campgrounds and sites to see along the way... Where you think there is lots to do yet is affordable, after all we are camping so we love the outdoors. So here it goes:
Outer Banks NC- suggested campgrounds, spending 4 days there.
Virginia Beach Williamsburg- two days campgrounds
Washington DC- 5 days campground suggestions
Philadelphia- 2 days campgrounds
Jersey and NYC- 4 days and have this covered
Niagara Falls and Toronto- 4 days campground info and time alloted pretty good for area? We want to stay on the US side just because of camper and customs etc.
Upper Michigan- 7 days- Where to camp? What to do for these 7 days? Ideas
Wisconsin- 7 days, Where to camp, what to do? The only things so far I want to do is the market in Madison, music festival maybe Milwaukee? and possibly a water park in Wisconsin Dells
Chicago- 5 days, just campground help here...
Kentucky- we have two to three days- anywhere you would definitely pick?
Nashville- Campgrounds- three days here
Ok begin! Looking forward to your ideas!!!

Upper Michigan, go to St Ignace and do a day trip to Mackinac Island. We liked Lackshore Park Campground in St Ignace.

Everyone is going to tell you Cherry Hill for the DC area. Very nice CG and easy access to DC.
In Kentucky you want to go to Mammoth Caverns we stayed at Singing Hills Campground which is a small no frills CG. The hosts were great and we don't lay around the CG so we don't care about frills.
The rest of your itinerary is out of our normal area.

Camper and customs issues should not be a decision maker to you about camping in Canada. We do it all the time even with a dog - vet fills out a paper and we have to get another piece of paper on the vehilcles from the insurance company.
On first blush your allotment on time in the upper Pennsila of Michigan is a bit much
Suggest you look at Door County Wisconsin - just east of Green Bay - a wonderful area. The Dells have zillions of water parks, be prepared for a highly commerical tourist area. Very much like Myrtle Beach if you have been there
Not sure age of the son but depending on age I might add days in DC lots and lots to do

Virginia Beach Williamsburg- two days campgrounds --> you could spend two weeks, since there are lots of sites to see. Also, it is at least an hour between Virginia Beach and Williamsburg. Choices at the beach include the Holiday Travel Park or First Landing State Park. The Virginia Aquarium is very interesting. Toward Williamsburg there is lots of history - Yorktown, Jamestown, Wm'burg. Depends on what type of site amenities you want and what types of sites you want to see.

Monmouth Caves -definitely!
Wisconsin Dells looks like it'll would be great fun for a five year old. If you go there consider a stop at Circus World and a more low key attraction - The Crane Foundation
First Landing State Park in Virginia beach is a beautiful ,natural campground. The ocean beach is on the Chesapeake Bay so it doesn't get huge waves.

Good good ideas. My son is 5 and extremely inquisitive. He is also very mechanical, factual etc. Trying to keep it pretty family oriented as he is an only child and campgrounds with kids are heaven for him. Will make note and check out St. Ignace. Also take note of extra amount of time in Michigan... Re: Canada, we were only going to drive straight through to Mi from Niagara there. Map program routes it only an extra hour US so we thought we might pull off for a night or two the US route. Not dealing with customs was just a bonus. Mammoth Caves in KY sound interesting. Will check that too. Wisconsin, Door County may just be the thing after much nature time... Considering joining KOA with the 10%. The closest they have to DC is Fredericksburg... I will check out Cherry Hill.
