Folks let get a grip. There have been refrigerator fires. I have never seen any reliable documentation on how many, which specific models or what the cause was.
Obviously the manufacturer believed that there was enough of a potential fire hazard that recalls were issued.
We have had a steady barrage of threads... Most of which are filled with anecdotal declarations trying to maximize as well as those attempting to minimize this issue.
Unfortunately the rhetoric usually leads to trolling and flaming... And as it has in this case derailed the thread.
I would prefer to not close this thread... Or have to remove or edit any more posts.
For us when we get our new coach for fulltiming our preference will be the large Residential fridge, our main preference is for the larger capacity of the residential fridge vs the convience of the 12cu Norcold (which I'm not all that confident in).
For the little boondocking we'll do running the gennie for a few hours a day will be fine with us.

Iam the opposite because i want LPG for outdoor(off grid) camping and road travel.I am on my third DP with a 1200 series fridge and all have worked well.I had one bad thermister(30.00)I have total confidence in Norcold.The amount of 1200 that caused fires is very low and always seems to be in older models and DID NOT have the shut down relay system installed .Kinda funny all u people cry about norcold and yet dometic has had more fires than norcold
I read the article as well and it was pretty obvious that is was written by Norcold as an advertisement. A lot of the pages in the new magazine are looking this way. They are informative but most are just advertisements with more details.
In response to those who still extol the virtues of NORCOLD, I live in a community that has about 200 motorhomes. Of that 200, or so, we have experienced 3 fires officially attributed to refrigerator failure. Two of the three resulted in complete destruction of the rv, one of which was contained in an attached motorhome garage and substatially damaged the home, and sent both occupants to the hospital in an ambulance for smoke inhalation. In addition, I attended an American Coach rally at the Naples Signature Resort, where at 3am an American Coach burned to the ground, with the two occupants narrowly escaping with their lives. It also was attributed to NORCOLD failure. So there are a few of us who know as much as those who refuse to acknowledge the problem with NORCOLD.

To you and the other poster that lives in the Florida compound. I state that the ONLY fire problems in the 1200 series I have seen were NOT cooling unit failure/leaks that caught fire. I believe that there are probably 1200 cooling unit leaks that caused a fire. BUT, as I stated, MOST people do NOT know the cause of the fire that happened at the Norcold refer. Yes, there may have been fires, but NOBODY knows if it was caused by a leaker or lack of maintenance on the rear burner area. Just because there was a fire and it WAS a Norcold 1200, does not mean it was due to a cooling unit failure
Last, There have been cooling unit leakers and failures for 100 years and the fact that they would cause a fire is minimal. so most RV refer makers are installing safety devices to shut the refer down. BUT, the Norcold recall will NOT really keep your refer and RV from burning in a sudden catastrophic cooling unit break. MOST cooling unit failures are very slow leaks and once the ammonia leaks out, there is NO fire hazard. The 1200 recall is just an OVERTEMP protection FOR the cooling unit. IF the refer is caused to overheat ( Blocked ventilation) then THAT can cause a potential cooling unit leak. So, the recall will shut the complete refer down and off if it overheats before it can cause a problem with the cooling unit
REMEMBER a few years ago when Dometic was having their recall about fires or potential fires?????? EVERYONE was on the bash Dometic bandwagon like they are now on the 1200 Norcold and funny thing is, you don't see or hear anyone complaining about Dometic fires. Doug

Let me ask you and please answer me.The units that failed and caught fire were what year ?? and do U know for a fact that they both had the LATEST norcold sensor shut down system installed?
I live in a Class A only community of 419 RV lots and in all my 5 years of being in here I have never seen or heard of a fridge fire nor has any of the many people in here that I have talked to

Well now, you are contradicting the "expert" in the field, who has NO knowledge of any Norcold failure causing a fire........are you sure those fires were directly contributed to the Norcold failure or just maybe some poor bird had his home destroyed.. ..I too, have seen the results of proven failures, where the FD could pinpoint the exact point of failure and fire, and there was NO poor birdy involved.....
That is why my Norcold 12xx which NEVER appeared on a Norcold recall list published for me to see, but was on one the dealer showed me, is on its way out and a good residential model on its way in....
