Thanks for the update. There have been many on this and other forums who have had problems with their Escape transmission while towing. There are also many like myself who have had no problems. Your build date is the key and you are covered in case of any malfunction. There are no guarantees.

I have e the 2011 Fusion with the same transmission and have now 4 transmission failures. The car has been at my dealer since 5-17-12 waiting for another transmission. When I requested a buy back Ford said that they don't do buy backs and to just keep towing and they would replace as long as it is under warranty. They also installed a Remco pump which has been destroyed by the transmission 2 times. I am now working with an attorney to sue under the Lemon Law. Been a Ford person my whole life, not anymore. Hello Jeep.

I haven't been on the forum since posting our towing problems 07/16/2011. After our return to GA we had the Ford Escape checked with thr Mtr Home (2004 Damon Escaper) The dealer said all was ok and to continue towin, this was after two episodes and repair on first and a fried tranny the second time. We towed about 160 miles and the tranny was fried again. Ford replaced the transmission and our dealer went to Ford to have them install a Remco Pump or it would be a buyback under Lemon Laws. Ford installed the Remco pump at no charge to us and also is carrying the addon included with Ford Warranty.

I stopped by Rodeo Ford, west of Phx. and inquired about the 2013 Escape. In a discussion, the sales agent said the 2012 Escapes are ok a lot of conditions, pump, etc. Too many issues for me. He also said the the 2013 IS NOT TOWABLE. He just got back from a training session.

The 2013 Escape transmission is CVT. As far as I know nobody makes a CVT that is flat towable.
My wife wanted to get a Scion IQ to tow but it only comes in CVT.

Odd. We've always been told that the reason our Hybrid is ok to tow is because it has a CVT. We've been towing it since 08.

There have been numerous discussions about the Escape Hybrid and CTV. I see now that the most recent comments indicate that the Escape Hybrid with CVT is flat towable. A brief review of many other manufacturers who use CTV state categorically that their CTV vehicles are not flat towable. These include Chrysler, Nissan, Suburu, Toyota and Mercedes.

We have the Escapes cousin a 2010 Fusion with 41K on the odometer and another 10K flat towing. No tranny problems had TSB done before we took delivery in Dec 2009. I have scratched my head trying to figure why some blow and some just go on and on. Towing behind a hot DP could be part of the problem, we have a FRED. We try to stay under 65, but occasionally hit 70+ when going downhill in mountains. We use a TOAD Charge to keep our battery up (the Even Brake was causing complete discharge) and usually stop every 4-5 hours to run car.
Since we will be approaching the 60K mark in the next two years (limit on powertrain warranty), I am looking for an alternate toad, was hoping the new Escape would use the manual automatic found in the Focus but we may have to look at the Focus or SOB. I also like the Chevy Colorado 4x4 but its discontinued this year until 2014 maybe?

In an earlier post I said I had towed my 2012 Escape from FL to Maine with no problems. I can now report that I also towed it back to FL from Maine with no problems. Also, during the summer in Maine I towed it to NH and back to Maine as well as to other places within Maine. No problems at all. I love the car and am careful about going by the book to get it ready for towing. When I had the oil changed I made sure the technician showed my the fluid level. I didn't want to take a chance that someone had topped off the fluids.

And let me add another successful tow.
I drove from southern Arizona to northern Illinois so I could work at the Ryder Cup golf tournament. Towed my 2010 Mariner 4,545 miles on the trip. Everything was great.
I've had the Mariner almost 2 1/2 years, towed it about 18 times and over 20,000 miles. So far, so good. I hope I didn't just jinx myself.
