We are planning a trip from the Midwest to the east coast. I've driven the tollway across Indiana and Ohio many times and am looking for alternatives - mainly just because of boredom and a desire to see other things. I don't have any issues driving on the tollway or the cost or anything like that.

However, we still need to make decent time on this part of the trip. We need to get from Davenport, IA to west of Cleveland on this day. We'll cross Cleveland mid morning of day 2 and have a shorter day up to Niagara Falls from there.

My question is, has anyone crossed Indiana and Ohio on US-6? From Google Maps satellite view it appears to be 2 lane the entire way. Google tells me it is about 2 miles shorter than the tollways, but an hour longer from Valparaiso, IN to Cleveland, OH.

What kind of road is this? Decent? Would you consider that? Or is it a nightmare of slow speed limit small towns that will take forever to traverse? Is US-20 any better? Any other ideas?

Rt. 6 is a good road in Indiana from South Bend to the West side of Cleveland. If I were you, I would take Rt. 6 from the Valpariso, Ind. area to Sandusky, Ohio. Get on Route 2 (4 lane limited access) and us this road toward Cleveland. Rt 6 becomes a mess East of Sandusky.

If you send me a private email, I can give you more detailed instructions on your trip further East.

Wave at the Amish in Indiana; Say Hello to Bowling Green State University; Buy some ice cream at Toft in Sandusky, Eat at Barardi Stadium Dinner (corner of Rt. 4 and Perkins Ave.) Go South on Rt. 4 from Rt. 2. It is on the NW corner opposite the big manufacturing plant) Parking in the area.

Thanks. I appreciate the feedback. I understand the route that you are describing. How slow do you think this route is compared to the tollway. Do you think that Google Map's estimate of 1 hour longer is pretty accurate?

At Walkerton, IN you could solo in a powered parachute, weather premiting, with about 3 hrs of safety stuff. They talk you thru a 20 min flight, not sure of the price now but 10 yrs ago it was only $200. They have camping hookups.
