The camping in the schools is a good idea - and you don't have to be in the "city" of Anchorage. The Anchorage school district extends all the way to Chugiak, and there are some superbly beautiful school grounds in Eagle River and Chugiak - surrounded by nothing but wilderness, not houses and busy streets... My children attended Alpenglow and Birchwood ABC, which both have wonderful settings/view. But really any school in Eagle River or Chugiak would be amazing!
