We went through there around stampede time. We didn't know about it in advance.

Guess what....There wasn't a campground to be found with space. Wound up going to Edmundton to see the worlds largest mall.

Bigger than the Mall of America.

It gets light very early at that time of the year up there and so you may want to have a way to block out light in your bedroom.

At Banff, the finest campground is Tunnel Mountain - great views, nice sites, every amenity. And Banff is a neat town to explore, too. Only 1-1/2 hours to Calgary from there.
And BTW, welcome to Canada!

If you don't have to go to Vancouver, use the Sumas border crossing.
The other option is using RT97 crossing at Osoyoos+ then going thru the Okanagon to Revelstoke, very nice senic drive(wine country+ alot more!!)

Thanks for the advice. We are traveling in a 40ft diesel. I have looked into a few campgrounds. One in Revelstoke; Canyon Hot Springs. One in Chilliwook; Cottonwood Meadows. Springcreek in Canmore. Springhill between Calgary and Banff. Any thoughts on these campgrounds.

I haven't been to Canyon Hot Springs for a few years but it used to be very nice. It is about 15 miles east of Revelstoke.
There is a KOA right on the east side of Revelstoke that is quite nice also.
Cottonwood Meadows in Chilliwack if I remember is right beside the highway and on a Golf Course.
Cultus Lake Provincial Park near Chilliwack is also quite nice bur again very popular at that time of the year and reservations will be required.
