Considering that 'ol Henry and his buddies were some of the first RVers, it would only make sense that there would be camping facilities available, and there are. Here's the link to their RV/Ticket packages.

Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.

Without looking I am sure they are offering packages at either Camp Dearborn or the Detroit Greenfield RV park - both of which are not close to The Henry Ford...in fact no campgrounds are close

Since you are coming from Maryland and entering Michigan via I-75 I would recommend Harbortown RV Resort (I-75 at exit #11) in Monroe, MI...but wth this one, as like the other two, you are still at least 15-20 miles away

Wayne County Fair Grounds is one of the closest placed to camp on I-94 just west of the I-275 interchange. Last year E & W sites were around $22 a night with dump station and restroom on site. There's WalMarts, Camping World, and several good restaurants within a couple of miles.

The museum package for Camp Dearborn (kind of nice actually) is not all that great even if you have a toad. From CD to HFMGV is 40 miles along some of the worst commuting roads in the territory.

M is real right. If you need FHU, you have few choices, Harbortown is still 35 miles, but not a commuter route.

Detroit Greenfield (Ex KOA) has FHU but is still 25 miles and the Wayne county fairground only 20. The fairground is inexpensive (last I looked) but are water and electric only.

If you have never been to Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, plan at least two days. Both my wife and I have been volunteers at the complex and advise people that the museum alone (18 acres under one roof) is about a 10 hour museum. It is worth what it will take for you to get to either or both.

Obviously - If you need more guidance, you can come back here.
Enjoy the visit.

...and besides the above The Henry Ford has the TITANIC exhibit with over 300 artifacts from the ship...very cool to see if you can!

If you have a larger rig I would avoid Detroit Greenfield and like stated above the route from Harbortown to The Henry Ford is all highway...

"Just minutes away." It all depends on what is happing on the expressway system, which is heavily used for commuting from suburb to suburb. Both are in the suburban fringes, rural areas in the '50s, urban now.

Ypsilanti is at least 20 minutes (15 miles) from The Henry Ford at the best of times, commuter traffic coming in from Ann Arbor mixed with usually heavy intercity traffic on I-94. I budget at least 35 minutes between Ann Arbor or Ypsi and Dearborn if I have an appointment to meet.

Camp Dearborn is more like 40-45 minutes (35 miles) if traffic is light, hour or more if snarled up. The South Oakland expressways carry heavy traffic well beyond commuting hours, but I think you can probably avoid the worst interchanges. Approaching from the south, you will bring your RV all the way through the Detroit-Oakland metro area to get to Camp Dearborn.

But Camp Dearborn is a very nice place; for many years the private rural recreation refuge of citizens of Dearborn, the property is large enough to help disguise the suburbs growing all around it. A nice place to stay, but not really close.

The Wayne County Fairgrounds in Belleville are closer by 4 miles than Detroit Greenfield RV Park, still not really close. Both locations are on the southern fringes, and you can use US-23 or the southern leg of I-275 to avoid, or skim the edges, of the suburbs.

From Belleville or Ypsi I would take I-94 to the Southfield Expressway to get to Greenfield Village. From Milford, there are at least three routes ranging from "skim the edges" to "get into the thick of it." I would want to see the morning traffic report, and check with relatives about where the construction is, before picking a route. To get between southern or southwest Oakland county to the Ypsi area, Romulus, or west Dearborn, I often use surface routes to avoid the mess that builds up around interchanges on the expressways north of I-94.

If I was going only to The Henry Ford/Greenfield Village, coming from the south, I would stay in Monroe (Harbortown RV Park or Sterling State Park) and take I-275 to I-94 to Southfield, or I-75 to Southfield Road in Lincoln Park.

It is also going to depend on what you mean by campground. The campgrounds will be at Camp Dearborn and Sterling State Park. The other choices are RV parks or RV parking lots rather than settings for camping.

We stayed at the Wayne County Fairgrounds last spring. We were about 20 minutes away from the village. The cg has some full hook-ups. The prices were very reasonable. It is like a big grassy field, no trees. Right next to Walmart and some restaurants you can walk to. Not a place I would want to spend a month, but definitely met our needs for three nights. We would go back. Be sure to do the tour of the truck factory also. Very interesting. We did one day at the village, and the other day split between the tour and the museum. Could do one each day if you really take your time and have a lot of interest in the museum. I believe their new area in the museum should be open by now. They have a new RV section and restaurant.

I'm a little late on this on but for future reference I highly recommend Sterling State Park, it's right on Lake Erie and has pull through and full hookup sites.

The Michigan DNR site (www.michigan.gov\DNR) lets you pick your site by map, and since there aren't a lot of trees, satellite photo will show you the exact layout of the site.

You will end up being 30 - 45 minutes from the Henry Ford, but it I don't think you'll find much better any closer.
