I have searched this forum and have actually found a lot less threads than I had thought.
So, my question is- what is a decent in-motion antenna and are they easy to hook up?
I currently have a wind up Winegard antenna that works very well. Thing is, it would to allow the kids the ability to watch Nick while driving down the road.
I would also like to be ably to listen to NFL Sunday morning pre-game coverage while sitting in traffic waiting to get into our tailgate lot.

Are they just a matter of disconnecting the wind up antenna and replacing with the dome? Or is this an install best recommended for a professional?

are you talking about an over-the-air antenna or an in motion dome for Dish or DirecTV receivers?

You will need to be sure you have a receiver that will match up with the in motion dome you install. Then you will need to run the appropriate software to give the dome its signal finding instructions.

We have used a KVH Direct TV In Motion Dome for 10 years. I am using an old Sony receiver to aim the Dome and a newer DVR to record the shows while in motion or otherwise while the receiver aims the Dome. When sitting still, once the signal is locked on, I can turn off the Sony receiver.

When that Sony dies, I will have to junk my Dome Antenna because the receivers that DTV allows to be used today will not connect with our Dome and aim it.

So, I can't just spend $1200 for a Winegard in motion antenna and assume it will work with our Directv receivers?
Wow, if so I'm glad you warned me.

Currently, my wind up Windegard satellite dish works fine with our receiver...when parked.

I guess kids will just need to watch DVD's while going down the road and I can listen to the NFL Network on Sirius prior to the big game.

If the antenna and receivers are both recent models, then you will have a better result than I do. Check with Winegard using your current DTV receivers models to answer the question.

Sounds like you have SD and not HD tv. If so, the in motions from wineguard will work. They wont work with high definition.

The reason for not many posts on in motion domes is they are becoming obsolete. They are not HD, so many have gone to HD type dishes that are not in motion. With DVR's many people record hours of Nick for the kids to watch while traveling. With smart phones you can stream about anything you might want to listen to for NFL.

I upgraded to HD a few years ago and the dome went along with the old CRT TV's.
