I'm amazed! I ask a simple question i.e. regarding out of state safety check in states near California, I did not get one response I would regard as relevant, so I will rephrase it.

"Can anyone tell me if I can get a safety check done on my Class A RV in Nevada or Arizona" I wish to use this document to re-register my vehicle in North Carolina. At this stage I do not wish to drive it across the USA to its home state yet.

I am assuming that Nevada and Arizona require safety checks so they will have an appropriate document I can send to NC.

Several relevant ones there. If your RV is regestered in North Carolina then, your safety check must be done in North Carolina.

A person who is out of state may obtain an emissions inspection in the jurisdiction where the vehicle is located in lieu of an inspection in North Carolina as long as it meets the requirements of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (40 C.F.R 51)."

Lots of opinions here. Call NC DMV or state police and get facts.

When I moved to NC from MD 6 years ago I figured out real quick that since MD has no safty inspection, no emissions for diesels, no yearly tax on vehicles, not to mention the tax and cost to re-register it here----I kept it registered in MD. And since I still own a home in MD and the DP is hardly ever here 30 days without leaving the state I am perfectly legal.

I agree that contacting the NC DOT might solve your problem. I am sure you are not the first person to run into this.

You can always register you RV in MN. We have no smog or inspection tests. We also have no property tax but our tags cost nearly 400 bucks. We could use the money.

Thanks wny pat, we will go to Nevada as the RV is exempt from smog testing - not that this diesel is smoggy. For years I have been using acetone in the diesel fuel, it seems to work as a combustion enhancer, the oil stays cleaner and there is less soot near the exhaust.
Our last safety check was in Wisconsin and was accepted by NC DMV OK.
I was disappointed with Good Sam Customer Service, they could not answer my question, yet they actively promote "Full Timing" so the issue must concern many members.
Prior to the previous check we had tried to get information out of NC DMV, I could not find anyone on their phone who could answer the question:-(
Thanks everyone for trying.

Yup I always wondered why the contents of spray cans causes cancer only in california.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They cause cancer and other health issues everywhere. The states that do not require warnings are more concerned about the lost revenues than their citizens health.

If the county the OP lives in requires a smog test & a safety inspection, he had better get on the phone with the NCDOT to get a letter of waiver/extension.

Also, some states (NC ??) will allow, with prior arrangement, a Calif smog test to be used for registration. They issue a paper copy that can be provided to NC. Safety tests are not done in Calif, so that part is an issue to be cleared with NCDOT.

PS: when phoning ANY state office, always ask for a supervisor, and sometimes they don't even know the answers.

If I were in the OP's shoes, I'd call NC DMV and ask them what to do to prevent me from getting in trouble with them. 877-421-0020 I assure you that they don't bite. They just sound like it.

I'd go with this, and make sure that you get the complete name of the person you spoke with about your concern. Sometimes, they can be quite nasty when it comes to denying things that they've told/instructed you previously.
