I am about ready for some travel in Canada and was wondering about needing health insurance. I am on Medicare and have a sup plan. I have been told that Medicare is not taken in Canadian health facilities. what are some experiences of others?
Thanks for any help!

Medicare does not pay however your supplement may. Check with them. You would have to pay up front and then get re-imbursed.
We spend the Summer in Quebec about 25 miles from New York and Vermont. We go to Vermont as necessary for medicare coverage.
We have also been to Canadian Dr's when needed. Their fees are generally less than US fees.

If it's a medicare Supplement POLICY then it's not apt to pay unless Medicare does. MOST of them have to have something to be supplemental to.

Call your sup. plan. Called mine for a trip to Europe and they said they would pay 80% of any med. bill, but only after I paid all up front and brought them back the receipts. What a pain! Imagine Canada would be similar.

Medicare usually pays in Canada if you are on a DIRECT route to Alaska. Check your Medicare book you get each year.

It has nothing to do with "our" medical system. As others have said check with your plan. I work in health care and billing is part of my job. I usually ask for payment upfront and you deal with the insurance. It's the same when we travel south, my husbands extended medical covers us but we always take out a supplementary policy for long trips.

Two years ago I took my wife to the hospital in Whithorse for a suspected heart attack. We paid $400 plus canadian dollars before we went to the ER. This was for testing, patient care, etc. Doctor came in and ran some tests and said it was not a heart attack but indigestion. We paid him an additional $250 CD for his time.
We filed with medicare and our supplement insurance and ended up getting appx. 80% of the cost back. The key was that we were headed to Alaska and not a tourist in Canada. Took us several months and some phone calls but it worked out. Treatment at the hospital was very good.

Also be sure your coverage pays for ambulance travel. "Ambulance" in the north is often an expensive helicopter. If it is a traditional ambulance, then there is high mileage involved. If you're on the Alaska Highway in northern B.C., or the Cassiar Highway, you'll appreciate knowing your insurance will pay the bill should you need evacuation.
Even for Canadians travelling in BC and Yukon ... check your provincial coverage! It usually does not cover ambulance fees.
Gosh - just realized we drove from our home in Yukon to our home in southern B.C. last week without this coverage! Silly, silly!

Interesting questions.
I use to never be concerned but now..I'm VA Patient and have Medicare too and some coverage for ded and cp through wife's former Employer coverage.
Sounds like I might need to get a stand alone policy if we go north.
