I don't believe the OP was comparing one sport to another, he was considering who is the most fit. Baseball players definitely do not enter into that competition.

Quote: In terms of overall athletic skill and ability... the hockey player is perhaps the best skilled player in all of organized sports
He was comparing skill and ability. Each sport has world class athletes who have honed their skills and ability to their perspective sports.
Micheal Jordan was an incredible athlete and arguably one of the best B-ball players of all time. In 1999, he was named the greatest North American athlete of the 20th century by ESPN, and was second to Babe Ruth on the Associated Press's list of athletes of the century.Yet he tried and failed to cross over to baseball.

Heck... I was just bringing up how amazing NHL players are sometimes able to do the things they do... and on skates to boot (again, no pun ) Throughout the year I root for the Avs. Since they did not make it this year I can watch the playoffs without bias towards a particular team and just watch the game... and at times I am just amazed!
Engineer9860 brought up the concept of "specialization"... he is making my point by this aspect. Hockey player overall are perhaps the best athletes as they could play any position. Look at the points that defense-men have put up in the last 30 years on the ice. But the 97 mph fastball is slow compared to 107mph slapshots! And the fastballing ace on the mound does not have batting averages to make baseball player the better overall athlete.
Rugby... I do not know the rules of the game but I would say those players are pretty fricken tough! Those guys (and gals) go at it with very little protective equipment from what I can tell... and without really knowing this sport I would say that they could perhaps play any position putting them up there with the icemen as best overall athletes at any position within their game.
As far a kickball goes... probably really good in overall play in their game at any position. HUGE field and no substitutions during the game means a slower type of game compared to hockey. I wonder what hockey would be like on a rink the size of kickball fields! Prolly some amazing passing, but perhaps not the kind of action we see on a regular or Olympic size rink. Truly atheltes in there own right, but I saw just today where a kickball player died on the field if read correctly: Italian footballer dies.
I think that kickballers need to play smarter on the field because they cannot go all out during the game. Hockey with its 45 second shifts perhaps could be compared to "bursts" of action in American football... but the change on the fly on the ice I feel makes it more exciting to watch than the gridiron or soccer counterparts.
PRCA Bull Riders are just amazing to watch!!! But somehow somewhere you'd think that even basic physics would interject and cause them riders to pause about there choice of careers! God bless their hearts, but I think I would rather be on the receiving end of 5-1/2 ounces of frozen rubber launched from a Zdeno Chara stick over the potential of a ton of steak falling on me!
...keep the discussion going... this is the type of banter among my co-workers at the office... I know the guy who sits across from me would comment saying that male ballet dancers are in fact athletes. he would also go on to say that with the right petite nimble ballerina accompanying him it could be a competitive and contact sport (LOL... )

...oh, forgot to mention: I attended my first ever basketball game earlier this year. I used to think it was boring (perhaps from watching it on the tube...) but watching it (I mean watching every second of it) in person gave me a better appreciation of the hoops sport. A co-worker said that the college games are perhaps more exciting than the pros. I did catch a little of the March action, but I feel that to truly get "into the game" one needs to see it live as it happens on the court.

Really?
Take a look at a starting pitcher throwing a complete game on a Sunday afternoon in August.
If you don't think that doesn't require some epic stamina, then you don't know much about baseball. Same goes for the catcher. Try wearing all of that protective equipment for three hours in the month of May, let alone August.
It is a grind. When I coached baseball I would constantly remind my catchers to take off their equipment when it was our turn to bat. I'd also remind everyone to drink plenty of water.
Anyone who thinks you don't have to be fit to play baseball needs to quit using men's softball as your benchmark.

I think we may be looking to debate symantics, but your point is that hockey players can transition into other roles as the game is constantly evolving.
Soccer, and basketball are very similar.
However, football, and baseball cannot be compared to hockey, basketball, and soccer in this respect.
Football, and baseball have so many player positions that are played like no other positions on the field. No two player positions on a baseball field are played with the same objectives. Even the three outfielders have specifically different roles based on runners on base.
So your claim "best overall athlete" should be restated to "most versatile athlete".

I am enjoying the heck out of the first round. I would add the regardless of the sport that the post season of any game is very exciting!
