How do people to make such a big deal out of getting from place to place. I use to hitchhike from Sacramento to Seattle at 20 years old no big deal. Now it takes a forum, a GPS and 20 consultants. What happened to self reliance? Sorry but I just don't understand it.

A lot of things do not make sense. Road maps were free once, now they want big bucks for them. It is cheaper to go online and print your own. (or use the device of your choice)

I hitched a lot, too. The part that I "didn't get" was that a third of my rides were women driving alone.
Once on the way from Michigan to Florida, I made a detour through Alabama to see my Granny. Getting back to the interstate, a couple picked me up. I remarked that I usually never saw a stop light, country roads were new to me. I ended up driving them all the way to Tampa, they were not famiiar with the interstates.

Another thing that I don't get is campgrounds. I use public access sites, park n ride lots, state and national forest sites and nature preserve lots.

It takes all kinds. There is more than one way to do almost anything.

I find reading threads about different routes to places to be very informative. Since I am towing a trailer, I do want to know about road conditions, rest stops, campgrounds along the way, gas stations, etc.

My family has gone to Disney World from Connecticut twice in the last 5 years. People here on these forums were extremely helpful with routes, what cities to go around, road conditions... etc. I also found out here about a great hotel to stay at with plenty of parking for our camper, and on the second trip a few members here recommended a great campground at the halfway point of our trip. The maps I have don't have that information.

I also just find it interesting to read about different routes. Especially during the winter it is kinda nice to read a thread about a certain route, then pull out a map and look it over. Some routes I would not have thought to take, but using recommendations from these forums I have found great new (to me) ways to get places.

Road conditions change constantly, and it seems to me that I can get more accurate and up to date information about construction and conditions on these forums than even from the daily news.

I also like to think I may be helping a fellow camper out when I contribute to a thread about a certain route if I have the latest information about it (including probably just having driven it).

So anyways, I find these forums to be a great help in planning out trips.

I sort of think the same thing on some of the "HOW TO GET TO/FROM" threads.

I hitched a few times in my youth when I was in the service. But that was what seems like a life time ago. In today's world, I would not dare hitch hike.

I will grant that if some folks got out a map book, or even used map quest, they would find out how they needed to proceed.

However, sometimes folks ask about a route between point A and point B to find out a more scenic one, or to avoid particularily bad "white knuckle" roads.

I, for one, would drive 100 miles out of the way just to avoid a "white knuckle" route.

Welcome to the 21st. century. It's all about convenience.
I have some old maps from the 70's, they still work and have never been 'updated'.
Yes, I do have a GPS, but the maps are a nice backup and they don't tell me to cross a river where there has never been a bridge.

When I was young, I drove a cherry red 1964 Impala SS Convertible. The rig I drive now weighs over 30,000 pounds, is 13 feet high, is almost 60 feet long including the Jeep, and cannot be backed up with the Jeep attached. The traffic is always about a hundred times worse as well. That takes a little bit more planning than in the late 60s. I can always get from point A to point B the old way but a little advice on the easiest way is always helpful whether it be from the forum, a GPS or the overhead clearance site.

When I was hitchhiking in the 70's I wasn't lugging around a 6,000+ lb travel trailer...that is why people want to know about roads and routes and road conditions and where the steep grades are, etc.

x2 Very well said, my first new car was a 67 Camaro Convertable, SS 396 Yellow with a black top. Wish I had it today but had to sell it when the Navy shipped me off to the far east. Oh and hitching a ride back then was really really scary at times.
