Was thinking that myself, LOL.
But I agree, the chassis/wheelbase of the OP sounds very risky.

Help is on the way, ordered my bags last week. Part of the problem with that pic was we just left the dealer and i think they installed my hitch with their eyes closed. Once I got it home I took it apart and redid it. The way they had it set up I dont think was "distributing" any weight.
I guess the thing that got me with the Airstream set up was not as much the power issue, as much as being over the tow capacity by at least a ton if not more, and the fact that the rear bumper on the tow vehicle looked like it would probably drag going in to some gas stations. Im betting the gears arent the greatest for towing either.
This was just an observation though, If they had a good time camping and they feel that what they have is safe, more power too them.

Quote: I am not the weight police and generally try not to get involved in alot of "can i tow this" discussions. But this weekend as the campground I saw a Buick Enclave which is a little SUV pulling about a 33 foot Airstream TT. Curiousity got the best of me so I started googling the setup to see If I wss right. Max towing capacity was 4500 lbs. It has a wopping 280ish horsepower v-6 and torque wasnt even listed. The Airstream looks to have a 6000ish lb dry weight. WTF......Is there an engine that was put in these things I didnt see online
Google Airstream and think ALUMINUM.
I don't even think there is a one that weighs 6,000.
Most of these Airstreams weigh in at 2,600 lbs.
The newer 31 ft Sovereign ones being the heaviest at 4,000.
So I do believe he was well within his towing limits. It IS one of the reasons people buy Airstreams because they are lighter weight than new TT's.

Am I missing something here?
Yup you sure are!

Go here Can Am Rv if you want to see more of Andys' set ups. I live down the road and see them on the road all the time. Always makes me do a double take.
Some examples;
V6 Mustang convertable towing 24' AS
Mini towing an 18' Bambi
Jag, Cadillac, Chrysler 300 and an Enclave hooked to a 32' AS
Dodge Caravan and a 28' AS (saw it in the Rockies!)
and many more.

That Buick is no a China Bomb, it's built by GM and may have had a V8, I think that is an option. Looked at the Traverse about a year ago to tow our boat when we didn't want to use the diesel pickup, but mileage at around 23 on the highway wasn't good enough to replace our 35 mpg, on the highway, Camry hybrid so we didn't pursue it further. The Traverse is the Chevy version of the Enclave.

Heres the link. It was an Airstream Classic. Unit base weight is more than I thought. 7100. GVWR is 10,000
And did you even look at the link you posted? There are numerous trailers listed that are really heavy. Actually they seem to be anything but light weight.

Quote: who REALLY needs that much power in the small rigs we drive?
15K high front 5th wheel trailer + 20-30 MPH headwinds + 5-8% grades = need lots of power. Lots of it.
