I live in the Greater Cincinnati area. With I-71, I-75 and I-74 passing thru downtown and involving 3 different states, we carry a lot of thru truck traffic. There's always some portion being repaired. Sometimes we go from "Left Lane Closed" to "Right Lane Closed" just by going from one state to another. Before I retired, I was able to "time shift" my job to 5AM to 2PM and miss most of the daily tie-ups. We just have two seasons here. "Orange Barrel" and "No Orange Barrel". Gee, I sure miss that.

Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.

Why not call the Cracker Barrel before you leave and ask if the work is going on today, or not. Just tell them you are trying to allow time to stop for breakfast.

Well, they did it to me again. After a week of "clear sailing", it was back to long lines today as they closed the road down again to 1 lane northbound. Not sure what the problem was. There were a bunch of guys in helmets looking at the slope and scratching their heads. Some even had ties, which I know is a bad sign. I do hope they are not worried the whole thing is going to collapse into the valley. That would make my commute a real bother.

Not sure if I should take the "long" route and avoid the area in the morning or just hope for the best.

LOL, that's a good one. The only real problem is the Cracker Barrel is quite a bit off the road, so they have no view of the construction. I guess when it gets backed up enough to back up the freeway PAST their exit, they might actually be doing better business. As an aside, when we had our bad tornadoes and had no power for a long time, for some reason, Cracker Barrel DID have power through it all. They did a BOOMING business those weeks as they were the closest place with power to our town. When you are cleaning up tornado damage, there is nothing like a hot meal in a cool building to pick up your spirits.

Oh, and this morning, the "fast" route was clear and I actually took it. I know I was tempting fate (and that short putt into insanity), but I took the chance and was rewarded with a clean run into work.

All kidding aside, I am actually concerned that the on again, off again construction is actually the engineers checking on the stability of the cliff. Now from the road, it doesn't look like much of a "cliff", but from the "slow" route, I can see why they call it a cliff. A while back, a semi-truck sized chunk of the cliff ABOVE the freeway decided to come down and land next to (not on) the other lanes (Southbound) of the freeway. It may be that the entire cliff where the highway runs is becoming unstable and may continue to collapse. I see they installed what looks like sensors in the road. If the cliff totally goes, my "slow" route into work may become my ONLY way into work. That would not be fun. I also don't want to be anywhere near it if it does all slide down into the valley.

I don't know about Amazon, but eBay quite frequently has helicopters listed.
In fact, at the present time, there are FIVE listed under "other vehicles and trailers (aircraft)".
The 1965 Huey would be just right for commuting to work.
Then again, maybe the safari/Helicom would be better. The Huey has no records!

I'd just stick with the "long" route for the foreseeable future (say a couple months) and poke your local DOT website (If available) to see if there's a progress report or notifications area for road construction.
