paulm999, I COULD drive it, I have before. It is 665 miles one way, right at 10 hours of driving. I would be alone in the truck, I am diabetic and have a bad back, can't stand driving that long. The older I get, I would just as soon hurry up and get there and not kill myself or someone else doing it. Airports and the hassles with security do not bother me, but sitting on my butt 10 or 11 hours sure does!

We've started to fly more often than using the MH (for various reasons) and none of the "discout" websites has ever beaten the fare I've gotten just by going directly to the airline's website when going "apples to apples", i.e. using the times that I want. The "o'dark thirty" flights aren't always worth the extra savings.

I would think carefully about getting a private plane for "necessary" transportation. As mentioned, it depends on good or relatively good weather, but there are also significant operating costs to consider: insurance, fuel, oil, annual inspection, expensive parts that (no matter what) seem to wear out, rental cars at the destination, etc.

That being said, the fun factor can be signficantly higher.

My wife and I have been retired for 10+ years. Back in the 90s we used to fly from Philadelphia to Texas four times a year. That totally turned us off to ever flying again, and we haven't. We bought a truck and a fifth wheel and are now on our second fiver and truck.

We now have a need to travel to south west Virginia. To drive there from south jersey takes us 5 to 8 hours. I'm seriously considering getting my private pilots license. I have also been searching for a Piper Cherokee 140/180. I can buy a Cherokee for less then my diesel dually cost. ($38,000) The air miles from my general aviation airport is 210 miles. That is less then two hours in the Cherokee. For us that's a no brain-er.

That only works when the weather cooperates...... But think about a "sport" pilots license. No medical - if you have a drivers license you can get a license. Then you can pilot a 2 place aircraft.

The next time you fly, you might want to check out these seats. They will set you back just a pittance, only around $10k or so.

Many years ago, there used to be a Delta flight from Greater Cincinnati Airport to Nashville with a stopover in Atlanta, but ticket prices were controlled back then and were based on the miles between the departure airport and the destination airport.
Since Atlanta was a major hub, Delta flew there first to pick up other people going to Nashville.
But the word was out that if you wanted to fly to Atlanta, you booked a flight to Nashville and simply got off the plane in Atlanta and saved yourself a bunch of money.

Jim,
A co-worker of mine that lived off 10 mile was sending his son back to Denver for school after vacation. After shopping air fares they found out that catching the flight in Dayton was considerably cheaper than getting on the same plane in Cincinnati so they drove to Dayton. Upon arriving in Dayton they discovered they had left a bag at home. He told his son no problem, they would go home and get his bag and give it to him when the plane landed in Cinjcinnati (The first stop). They got his bag and went to the airport and found out there was no flight . When he asked what happened to it he was told that there were only 2 people in Dayton so they canceled the flight. Where is my son he asked. They put the two in a cab in Dayton and drove them to Cincinnati to catch the plane. You can't make this stuff up. We almost always drive to Columbus to fly because it's that much cheaper.

Aren't you limited with a Sport Pilot license to a certain radious of your home airport? I thought one of the restrictions was no cross-country flying.

My only comment is that we've done the 2 one-way trips before and lo-and-behold, we got "randomly" selected for baggage and personal searches every-time we turned around., it seemed. Our reasoning was that we were flying out of a different city than we arrived.

Could be a coincidence, but it stood out as "funny" to us.

A one-way ticket is a bit of a red flag.
