Last summer we were routed over some fresh asphalt in a construction area. I cleaned the tar off the truck that evening, but didn't notice a bunch of little tar specks on the front of the 5er. Yesterday, I tried to clean them with some bug and tar remover and it worked on the fiberglass, but didn't work at all on painted areas.
What, if anything, can I use so get old, set up, tar off - without ruining the paint?

Try some mineral spirits or straight gasoline on a rag....test carefully on a small out of the way painted area first.

All above are pretty good help but we have found that "bug Off" (a Thetford product is about the easiest for tar (old or new) as well as great for bugs.

If its a small area, try WD-40. The mineral spirits is an excellent suggestion too.

Kerosene will dissolve tar. Generally will not affect most paints. Mineral spirits is good, but some paints it acts as a catalyst.

we ran into some fresh tar out of Williams AZ a few years back,, was on a Sunday and no auto parts stores open to get tar remover,, stopped into a gas station,, asked the guy there what to use,, he gave us a quart jar filled with half gas and half diesel and some rags,,Wiped it on,, let it soak a few minutes,, then was able to wipe it off, didn't hurt the paint,, which was new at the time,, Had just painted the trailer before we left. It surprised me as I figure it would at least stain, when we got home a week or so later,, washed it and looked like brand new.

L.A. Awesome (you can get it at a Dollar Store)---- worked for me when I had same thing happen. However, you'll need to rewax when it's clean. Oh, be sure to rinse it off REALLY well...

Gas on a rag will take it off and not hurt the paint and will take off oxygenation used it many times then wax have tried diesel also but leaves surface oily.

I'm betting whatever you use, you will have to let it soak for a bit to soften the tar.
