OK looking to head to M/B this July and have been told that Ocean Lakes is the place to. But are there any other good campgrounds with comparable amenities. Musts are cart rental, on the ocean, fishing and would love to have shade.
BTW what is the deal with no fire pits at the sites?, is this a south thing or what? The Keys were the same no open fire at the camp sites? What is camping without siting by the fire at night roasting marshmallows, swapping stories and drinking beer?

Once you get an understanding of the wind coming in off the ocean, you will understand why they have no fire pits.
I can't think of many ocean side campgrounds up and down the coast that have fire pits. I have stayed someplace (Delaware, maybe) where you could have fires on the beach on the far side of the dunes, but those are few and far between. Plus lugging the wood and stuff over the dune kind of made it not worth doing.
Ocean Lakes is nice. I prefer Myrtle Beach Travel Park, but they don't rent golf carts. In fact, they restrict golf carts to the full timers.

You can try to get reservations in July at Ocean Lakes, but you will have a hard time, especially over a weekend. It may be possible if you are willing to move between sites. Also, if you can take a site without extending slides or an awning, then you might find one. lol
While Ocean Lakes does not have fire pits, they do allow fires. Many bring their own pit and we've noticed a lot just had the fires on the ground. I would ask them first about it personally and get the answer. Sometimes on these forums people will say things that are not true, half true, or got away with something. Then someone calls the reservation line and asks the question about it and then refers to that someone on a forum said they did it and etc. It just gets to be a big hassle to them.
You could try Lakewood. About 2nd best for what you were looking for in what you mentioned. Basically next door to Ocean Lakes (sepereated by a resort). Easier to get into than OL. It's where we have always gone before. This year was first time for me at OL and will be my first choice, then Lakewood. Pirateland is on the other side of Lakewood. There are folks on here that like it as well. It may be the easiest of the big 3 to get into (based upon popularity). If you are on Facebook, be sure to check them out and ask questions there. I know the marketing team at OL is on there frequently and will answer questions within a few hours normally, if not sooner.

Well the good news is both Lakewood and Ocean Lakes have openings for the dates we want. So I'm calling them in the morning just not sure what one we want to go to. Pricing is about the same with in a few bucks so was just looking for the best park. We were told that both of these parks are 300+ acre and with getting a late res we are going to be a long way off the ocean. So that is why we are looking for a cart.
The kids are grown 18 and well 18 when we go and both like to deep sea fish. Would like to find a bum boat to go out on or maybe a charter if not over priced. Do they allow fishing from the beaches?
Oh when we were in the keys (Key Largo) we had a hibachi grill and the Sheriff told us to finish grilling then never get it out again. Seems they were in the third year of a drought.
Thanks for the info I will check the post in the morning then make a decision.

No. Not in my opinion. Not much shade but that is why you have an awning.
These sites are big enough for your rig but not much more. If even 1 of three had a fire, it would be a smokehouse.
We still had a great time at OL and will go back there next time.
We were there in July and not sure we would have made a fire even if we could have. It was very humid all the time and 80 degrees by 8 am. Mid 90's each day and still plenty warm in the evenings. We enjoy the heat of July, but many Northerners do not.
OL is not voted the top of the heap repeatedly without reason. Awesone group of people. I always tell the story of going back after a ten year gap and they still had my phone, address, make of car, make of trailer, etc. My Doctor can't keep anything on file for ten minutes, always some garbage about a new computer system.
You must have a SC license to surf fish. stop at walmart and buy one.
OL is nice. yes you can surf fish anytime but the beaches are crowded at these times during summer vacations. (not totally sure of your dates )
very very early fishing or late night fishing works.
alot of golf carts at OL which is ok with us but many don't like it. We use our bikes to get everywhere. the area is big but walkable and biking. you don't 'have' to have a golf cart but they are nice
If you like lots of activity, amenities and excitement, Ocean Lakes is the place for you. If you like peace and quiet, go elsewhere. We book OL every trip to Myrtle Beach. LOVE IT!
