We don't use bar soap in our shower so we don't get any soap buildup

Go to Lowes or Home Depot and for under $3 buy yourself a Zip It.
For the soap scum just use a good organic drain cleaner. Let it sit in the trap for awhile and allow it to do a good job.

Once you have it cleaned out stop in any hardware and get a drain strainer to avoid future problems

I have a small spiral wire brush with stiff plastic bristles and a 1/2 inch ID loop in the top end. It is a total of about 10 inches long and the brush section is about 3-1/2 inches long and about 5/8 inch in diameter. I use it to scrub the tub drain 1 quadrant at a time. Works great busting up the scum and I work it down the p-trap a few more inches. It works great for removing the hair from the drain opening too. The hair gets all twisted up in the bristles. I remove it by pinching it loose with paper towels. I let it dry and keep it on the shelf under the sink. I got the brush in a small local hardware store in the welding supply section.
Basically the brush section is like a plastic bristled 20 guage shot gun cleaning brush used to scrub out the barrels, so you could probably use one of those as well.
