We are planning to go thru Atlanta and Memphis on our way north after spending the winter in Waycross GA. The issue I see is that I-22 does not connect to any other Interstate in Birmingham AL. The online maps direct us to use I-20 from Atlanta to exit 123 for Old US-78/AL-4N/AL-5N in Birmingham, then connect up with I-22. We will be pulling a 30' 5er. What do you think? Is this the way to go? Anyone have experience with this route?
We went that route from Atlanta to Little Rock with our 30' FW last June. The US 78 stretch is annoying but wasn't bad. We got off I-22 at MS 302 (exit 2, Goodman Rd) and went the 6-7 miles West to I-55/69 in order to avoid US-78 in SE Memphis.
I do wish they would get the I-22 to I-65 interchange completed!
JerJan10, Wow, thank you for the tip. I did not even see that 22 doesn't connect in Memphis. Have to go to state roads again there. I think we will take 65 to Nashville then 24. Don't need the hassle of driving thru big cities.
Nashville versus Memphis is "6 of one, half dozen of the other" with big city traffic in either case, but probably a little less going through Memphis. I completely agree with getting over to I55 from Goodman Road. Try to avoid both cities at rush hour.
