We are planning a trip to James Island park June 23-27. What historical type places are located near the campground? How far is places like Patriots Point and Fort Sumter? What else and the best time of day to go? I am assuming the earlier the better. Any other "must sees" in the area? Thanks
Fort Sumter is a long swim but the Nat'l Park Service runs a ferry there from the Charleston water front. We like Fort Moultrie better as we found it more historic. Sumter was litterally destroyed by the end of the war. They told us it was the most bombarded place in all of North America. What you see there now is a re-creation. Great places to eat in Charleston. Did you know there are 150 different susi places in Charleston. Great downtown walks. As a local told us, it is the only southern town that really does look like it belongs on a postcard.

ALL of Charleston is great. just park in the historic district, and walk around. you'll See the "Slave Market" Now a huge flea market, ( Bubba Gumps's is beside it) and NO it is not where the Slaves were bought, and sold. It was actually a market run by Slaves. Walk down to the Battery. where the war really started. Walk by the wonderful old houses with their gardens, and see Rainbow Way. let the kids play in the fountain.
Go to Patriot's Point, and see the Aircraft Carrier, and other war ships. About 15 min from James Island, across the bridge.
A place we really liked was Boone Hall Plantation. A still working Plantation, and the site of the filming of North, and South, starring Patrick Swayze.
DW really loved the Ghost Walks at night. Lots of history taught in the Ghost Walks. As there is in the Carriage rides
you will love Charleston.
BTW DON'T pick up the little tennis balls with sticks thru them. they are not the sovuneers you want to have. they are what the carriage drivers use to mark where the horses have used the potty, so the street cleaners knopw where to clean
James Island county park runs a shuttle for a fee to the visitors center each day from which you can do just about anything if you are concerned about parking. You can also drive to the VC and park for a fee. I did not think it was all that difficult in my F-250. Patriots point is not difficult to drive to and offers ample parking. My favorite sites were Battery Park, sight seeing the extensive old homes, Fort Moultrie, museums etc. I used one of the local tour outfits to see the city and get an idea on how to get around. Some streets would be a challenge for any vehicle. Good eating abounds, Hymans had the best seafood IMO
Our last trip (and only trip) was back in 2008. We only go when gas is $4/gallon (lol). We stayed at Mt. Pleasant KOA and went to Patriots Point, Hymans & Bubba Gumps. Took the carriage ride. Bubba Gumps is again a must for us. Hymans was ok.
