New to camping this year and just spent this weekend at a campground that is about 80% seasonal sites. The first 3 campgrounds we stayed at seem to be much more friendly both the staff and other campers. This weekend we definetly felt like outsiders. We seemed like more of an inconvenience to them as opposed to being welcome visitors. I'm sure we will not be returning to that campground. My question is, is this common where the majority of sites are seasonal and we should try to avoid these campgrounds or is this an isolated case? Thanks for any input.

It really depends on the occupants. Some like outsiders, some prefer their long established cliques. Ya just can't paint with a broad brush.

Most of the folks here are seasonal, we are seasonal, though not by choice. But aside from a hello now and then from the folks in the next site, we don't have contact with our fellow campers. Many of them park their rigs here full time and only come in on the weekends from places like North Georgia and Chattanooga suburbs, judging by the license plates.

We have a seasonal site in Virginia...they have about 150 sites of which approx 45 are seasonal. I think everyone there is friendly to everyone...seasonal or not. Just must be the place you stayed. Don't go back would be my opinion.

Where we have a seasonal in up-state NY, there are 175 sites of which only 20 are set as seasonals. Personally I enjoy walking around and talking to different campers come in for weekends and vacation. I do see quite a few repeat customers throughout the summer.

We also get to travel several weeks a season and I enjoy going into transient campgrounds with more visitors than seasonals.

What is a seasonal site? I'm guessing from this conversation that it is a site where people can stay for the entire season? How does that work, and why would they set sites aside for that purpose?

How does that work One rents a space for the whole season at a seasonal price., and why would they set sites aside for that purpose? It's a guaranteed rental (income) for the owner and it's a convenient place for locals to camp often without being concerned with reservations or set-up

As a seasonal camper at a campground that is maybe 60% filled with seasonals I can see where a transient may feel like an outsider. We have our established groups of friends within our campgrounds and typically simply hang out with those we know. With that said I would love nothing more than to make new friends and share the fire. Next time you camp at a park with a bunch of seasonals just walk on over and strike up a conversation. You may just make some new friends.

There are many definitions.

Seasonal Sites are lots that people pay rent on and/or buy to permanently put their RV on and then they use that as their vacation spot. OR they bring their RV there for the months they want. But it is considered theirs.

CG's that advertise seasonal sites can also mean they cater to the Snowbirds long term stay needs during the winter in the warmer states.

Not to be confused with the term 'residents', sometimes you will see them list it as 'extended stay', 'permanent', etc.. These are sites they offer to people who live in one spot in their RV's. Some CG's that offer this option can be nice looking and some are not. It's all in what the CG management allows the sites to look like.

IMHO, JMHO I will stay at a CG that has 100 Snowbirds parked there anyday, over one that has 100 permanent, resident sites!

Bottom line don't sweat it, you will find that the minute you pull into a CG it will become quite evident whether or not it is a place that you would prefer to stay at with your family.

It was not your imagination. I have experienced the same phenomenon and avoid CG's with a high percentage of seasonal campers.

50-50 mix can be OK, Particularly if seasonals and transients are in different areas of a large CG.
But if you find yourself in a single site among lots of seasonals, you can get the cold shoulder
