Anyone towing with a 4.0 V6 w/ 6500 lbs towing capacity? If so, what are you towing & how is it doing?

DD and SIL tow a tent trailer. About all they can handle.

Towed a 19' hybrid at 3500lbs with my '03 4Runner with the same powertrain. Handled the weight with no problem but struggled with drag resistance at highway speed. The big issue was the tranny for that year was only a 4 speed which meant towing in 3rd which kept it out of the power band and it would bog down and hunt in 4th. I imagine the newer 5 speeds would fare better but no personal experience.

Towed with a 2006 V6 Frontier AT 2wd. Very similar to your Tacoma. Also had a 6500lb tow rating. Didn't like it. towed a 22' 4050lb loaded TT. It was narrower than most at 7'6 and 9'9" tall. 7.5-8.5 mpg. Once you got up to 60-65mph there was nothing left. Press on the gas and not much happened. Traded the Frontier in for an 08 F150 and loved it. MPG went up to 10.5, because the 5.4 didn't have to work as hard as the 4.0 V6.

Yes. I have a 2011 Tacoma with the tow package. WDH and sway bar Prodigy controller Pulling a 2011 Starcraft HTT. The trailer is 3000 lbs dry and since the max cargo capacity is 500lbs.. We are pulling at 3500lbs.
Two of us, mountain bikes, and maybe another 200 lbs of gear in the truck.
It pulls just fine. Been up into our local mountains at 7000 feet no problem. I take it slow and am quite comfortable. But I would not want much more behind me.

We pulled our X19H last year for a few times after we bought it with an '06 Tacoma 4x4 DC TRD OR short bed. Trailer dry weight is 3,600 lbs, loaded at 4,200 - 4,300 lbs (went to the scales several times).
I did not like how it towed, and we were over the payload rating. I can say that it was not very relaxing to drive that rig with two adults, two kids and some gear in the bed. I was one of those who did not listen, and now I traded for an F-150.

I had one and did trade up to an F150. With that said it is a capable vehicle at towing things. Sure bigger is better in this case but as many may remember this is what half tons were rated at 10-15 years ago and were about equal size. Just don't go crazy w TT size and weight and know for sure your Mpgs will be real bad as compared to a full size. Good luck to you. If you are in mountains you will be struggling a little more. Look at the HTT you ca get a nice size trailer at lighter weights or as someone mentioned a real nice pup as well

I towed our Rpod 175 (single axle, 3300 lbs. on DOT scales) all over Washington State with our '06 Tacoma Prerunner (4.0, 5 speed auto). The Tacoma did fine with that trailer. We got 10 to 11.5 mpg and breezed over the North Cascades highway in 4th tow/haul with it dropping to 3rd only occasionally. We used a WDH because the rear suspension of the Tacoma is a little weak.
I know a Tacoma is rated at 6500 lbs. towing, but in our state I wouldn't want to push too close the that limit. Yes, I liked the Prerunner and the towing job that it did, but I'm again towing with a full sized half ton, even though my trailer is not very big.

I have a 2010 Tacoma TRD Sport and tow a Forest River Minilite 22 ft trailer. Weight of the trailer dry is around 3700 - 3800 lbs. I installed a Toyota supercharger for towing. Power goes to around 304 hp and 335 ft-lbs torque. My trailer tows easily at freeway speeds and up hills (new Lewiston grade which climbs 2100 ft in 7 miles). Power is very good. I have the 6 speed manual and get around 17 to 18 mpg normally and around 10 mpg towing. Downside is the supercharger burns premium.

I have an '04 Tundra and it's capabilities are similar to the current Tacoma, except that it has the V8 instead of the V6. I've towed my fully-loaded pop-up without any problems. Scale weight was 2400# trailer with water & provisions, 6000# truck with the family & 2 dogs. I use the weight carrying (standard) hitch. Plenty of power and it rides very well. I've also towed a 5000# moving trailer without any problems, but we were moving my in-laws about 15 miles one way (two trips each direction). I wouldn't want to tow anything much bigger though. I like having some spare capacity.
To the OP: I wouldn't want to tow much over 4000# LOADED weight with the Tacoma. Look for a 3000# or less DRY-WEIGHT trailer. You'll obviously want to be taking the trailer into the Cascades, maybe the Coast Range. Give yourself some spare towing capacity to make it comfortable.
