I have a '94 class C MH and the frig has been inconsistent when cooling. Lately I hasn't been able to keep a consistent temperature and highs have gone into the upper 40's.

The frig is the original; The freezer stays cold but the frig doesn't.

I've been told I need a new frig.

Any information/ help/experiences that would help me here?

Thanks ahead of time!

Hi Diane,

Some times the fridge can be removed and turned upside down for 24 hours. Then it is reinstalled. That may, or may not buy some time.

Basically there is a blockage somewhere in the tubes.

Another temporary work around is to use ice packs. Have about 6 and use three while freezing the other three.

If replacement becomes necessary I'd seriously look at upgrading to an ordinary residential fridge (and yes that can be done while boondocking).

Check the connection where the fins in the fridge connect to the back wall. If they are loose it can cause this. There is only a single cooling unit in the fridge and the freezer cools first with the fridge getting what is left over. Might also consider swapping out the thermister but it doesn't SOUND like the cooling unit has gone bad.

More information is needed to diagnose a problem…
Gas, electric, level, door gasket, ventilation, ammonia smell, yellowish power in the cooling unit area,

When you were told you need a new one, they just might have been right… most problems whit the cooling unit are permanent…

I have been operating the frig on electric; tried it on propane and it got even worse. I have it as level as is possible. No smells or yellowish color in the cooling area.

The door on my rig is too small to get the old frig out so they will have to go out the passenger door or out the window.

I've been adjusting and re-adjusting the temperature in the frig for while now, 6 month at least as it wasn't holding a consistent temp though it did maintain a cooling temps.

Thanks again for your help.

There should be a temp probe clipped to one of the cooling fins in fridge section.

It is called a 'thermister' and makes minor adjustments to temp in fridge section.

Moving it up.....cooler temp in fridge
Moving it down....warmer temp in fridge

Where (which fin...and position on fin) is yours?
What refrigerator (Make/Model) do you have?

I have a Norcold, model 6183.

Thanks.

We had to put a reman Amish unit in our Norcold 6162 two years ago when it was 18 years old. It had a slight ammonia leak for about a year then got really strong.

Yes...moving it up will cause cooling unit to operate longer which causes more cooling in fridge section (freezer section gets colder)

I was unable to find any info (testing/resistance values) on thermister for your model.
Usually when they go bad it causes cooling unit to operate continuously causing fridge section to freeze up.
