Not for sure if this is the correct forum, but here goes. Sitting on my couch tonight, I heard a big bang coming from the garage. Sounded like a shotgun blast. Went to investigate, only to be met by a irritating and choking haze coming from where my battery was stored on a trickle charger.
Acid was sprayed on my wife's car, and plastic was scattered on the floor. Not for sure if it was caused by the trickle charger or the battery....it was 2 years old, and stored on a piece of wood on the floor.
Sure got my attention, as I have stuck my head in and around that area where it was stored many times.
Be careful guys....that battery exploding in your face would ruin your day.

Did you check the fluid level before putting it on charge?
I've heard it's not uncommon for them to explode if the plates are uncovered...
No first hand experience with it...thank goodness.
Glad that nobody was hurt...and your house is in one peice.

Sorry to hear about the acid being sprayed on wife's car.....just glad that it happened then and not when somebody was near it.
How long had it been in the garage with the trickle charger hooked up?
Last time water level was checked?

Somtimes sulphuric acid in the battery when charging, will release hydrogen...all it takes is for the charger..especially an older charger, to click on ant the contacts arc...Kablooey!

It was loose, not in a battery box. I had checked the acid levels about 2 months ago, and they were normal. The trickle charger was about 5 years old.

I had a similiar experience two years ago.....the explosion was so loud, my neighbor from across the street came outside to see what happened. This was on Superbowl Sunday.....amasingly as loud as it was(a 4 D Battery) there was NO damage to my battery compartment or the exterior. The acid wasnt Fun to clean up although the Baking Soda laundry detergent works great on neutralizing the acid.

A good friend and neighbor of mine had his home burn to the ground because of that exact same thing. The trickle charger was on his boat and it malfunctioned and wound up blowing the battery and started a fire in their basement.

I have one blow a cap off while on charger.. for shipping the vent holes in each cap had sealing tape on them and the heat of charging created steam pressure and softened the tar holding each cell in those old bakslite cases.. the center cell lifted up about one inch,, held in by lead cell joint straps.. then one cap blew..stripped threads. Another.. bought older MoHome.. old big 12v starting batt.. I had'nt checked water level.. had pluged in 120volt so charger was working.. cells very low on water..batt in slide rack under steps.. loud boom one cell dry..cap blew off.. old batt and very dirty all over top and caps..
