All . . . . . . I am getting really confused about this battery issue. I currently have two 12 volt type 24 batteries. I want to improve my amp hours. So, should I buy 2 6 volt GC batteries (removing the 12 volt batteries), or stick to 2 12 batteries?
I don't want to go with solar panels.
What is the difference between type 24 batteries, or 27 type batteries?

2ea parallel GP24's are ~180AH
2ea series GC batteries average a yield of ~232AH
All things being equal you will probably get a hands down vote for the GC batteries just because you can beat them to death for years.
Choose what ever voltage allows the greatest number of amp-hours to be crammed into the available space. The order of choice for me is 2 volt, 12 volt, 6 volt.
If the choice is 12 volt, wire in a balanced manner.
Apocryphal accounts seem to indicate that adding a modest solar system may extend battery life.

About two years ago my GC batteries partially froze, they had slush inside. I slowly thawed them and they're as good as new. They're 6 or 7 years old.
When they give out, I'll replace them with another pair of Golf Cart batteries.

If I had the room (height wise) I'd go with 2 GC batteries. As it is, my new to me HiLo came with a single Gp24. When I have to replace the single GP24, I plan to get 2 GP27's. The GP27 is the same height as the GP24, but is longer, which is okay for me because the battery space is long enough for the GP27's.

I have had very good results with Trojan 12V SCS series deep cycle batteries. The 24 is rated at 100 AH and the 27 is rated at 115 AH. The 27 weighs very close to the T105 which tells me it has about as much lead /AH. Two 27s will give you the same AH capacity aas two T105s. We currently operate with a single SCS 200 for our dry camping and use an Eu1000i every morning to maintain charge.

The referenced letter says
"a pair of group 24 12 volt batteries only provide 140-170 amp/hours of capacity, where a pair of golf cart batteries provide 180-220 amp/hours".
I will replace my two type 24 batteries by a set of two 6 volt deep cycles batteries. If we will do more boondocking I will get a 1000 or 2000 Honda generator.

Get more batteries if you got the space. No need to start the recharging regimen if you don't have to (you're likely to discover your present charger isn't good enough=more cash to spend). I have a battery only setup that gets us through a 3-4 days of camping without going below 80-85%.
Assuming the two six volt GC2 will fit in the space alloted
Two G-24's at about 75 Amp Hours each 150 Amp hours, since these are Marine/Deep cycle you should keep them at least 3/4 full giving you only about 45 usable amp hours.
Two GC-2 six volt 220-230 amp hour batteries in series is still 220-230 amp hours. Try to keep them at least half full giving you 110-115 amp hours of usable power.. and likely a few dollars cheaper as well if you buy them at Sam's Club.
Being flooded wet cells instead of Maintenance free the GC-2's will need more cleaning and occaionsal topping off with DISTILLED water (lots more attention) however they will repay you by lasting longer if properly maintained.
What make six volt pairs so popular.. Basically it is the best "Bang for your buck" (most amp hours per dollar).
