We have a 31' Thor Hurricane and we're pretty new to the Class A world. We're headed to Myrtle Beach next week and were trying to figure out if there are any highways we need to avoid with her. We'll be towing a 25' trailer with 3 bikes on it as well.

Specifically, I'm trying to determine if there are any bridges, tunnels or highways that don't allow Class A's on them between NH and SC.

I think for the most part we'll be on 95 (at least once we get to NJ).

Any of you East Coast snow birds out there can help me out? It would be much appreciated!
Thanks!
Sue in NH

There's nothing anywhere along I95 that would be a restriction. You may have to shut off propane if you go through the Baltimore tunnel.

Not sure where you are starting out, but we ourselves avoid the NJ Turnpike/Baltimore/Washington areas because of usually very heavy traffic.

I typically go one of two ways depending upon what we want to see. First is NY I87 to I88 (Albany) then onto I81 south to highway 66 in Virginia and onto highway 17 to I95 at Fredericksburg. The second way is I87 to I287 (Newburgh) and onto I78 west to I81 then follow above.

Others will have more accurate information about restrictions, but... is there anyway you can go around I95 from about New Haven, Connecticut until you are past Newark, New Jersey? I don't know about driving a Class A, but towing a trailer that way is really rough, both with highway conditions and traffic.

Edit: Packerbacker's post covers it...

You can't take the MH through the tunnel on I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Harbor Tunnel) in Baltimore due to propane restrictions. You also exceed the width restrictions (eight feet) for the Harbor Tunnel). Take I-695 around instead.

I don't know of any major roads that have any restrictions for your rig. If I was taking the bikes to Myrtle Beach, I would seriously consider taking the long way and going I 84 to I 81 and across 17 to I 95 in Virginia south of the Washington traffic. You won't have to reassemble the bikes before you can ride either.

The Fort McHenry tunnell in Baltimore prohibits propane (hazardous material) so you use 695 either east or west around it. Can be a real pain with traffic. To avoid both Baltimore and DC, just past Wilmington De., exit onto 896 south. This will turn inot 301. Stay on 301 til Bowling Green Va and then drop back to 95.

Good to know about know about no propane through the Baltimore tunnel. We haven't been through it for many years now.

Not sure of your starting point, but I84 to I87/287 - using the Tappaneze (sp) Br is a better option than I 95 and the GW Br. Or just stay on 87 and enter NJ via I287 - no toll bridge. Stay on 287 in NJ to NJTP (exit 10) - get off NJ TP at 7 - stay left and pick up I 295 S - cross into Del vis Del Mem Br - from I 95 take the exit for 896/301 - exit 1, I think. Stay on 301, merges w/US 50 - cross Bay Bridge and Nice Br - look for 301 and 50 split - stay on 301. This will take you to I 95 just north of Richmond. Mileage wise, probably longer - stress and traffic - much less. I avoid I 95 in the NY/NJ/DE/MD/DC areas when in the motorhome.

I take I84 west through Ct, and pick up 684/287 to the Tappanzee, then down from there. Bypasses the whole New Haven/Stamford I95 mess, as well as the George Washington Bridge.

As a side note, you might want to check the weight of your trailer and the towing capacity of your Thor. Most gassers are rated between 3,500 and 5,000lbs towing. Depending on what's in your trailer, you may be close to the limit.

Safe travels,

Jim
