My Panasonic compact camera is no longer working and not worth the money to fix it. I am hesitant to get another Panasonic with the lens error and dust issues that I have had with it although the pix were good until the problems started. I have an old Nikon DSLR but want something small to carry all the time and to use when camping or on the beach. To me, the most important things are image quality, wide angle, good macro and some manual capability. I am mainly considering Nikon or Canon in the $200-400 range.
Anyone have suggestions on what they have and like or tried and don't like?

In my opinion, you can't do much better than a Sony DSC-H3 (or comparable model), which is well within your pricepoint. We have had one, as has my mother-in-law, for years and they are great, reliable cameras that take wonderful pictures.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Nikon or Cannon. I have an old A70 Cannon. The circuit board died when it was about 10 years old. Cannon repaired it for free. I was impressed. My wife just bought a Cannon A3000 and carries it on her purse strap where ever we go. Takes pretty good pictures, but I'm not totally impressed. However, it is small. I don't like the chargeable batteries. Seems like she is charging the batteries all the time. I went out and bought the Nikon Cool Pix L810 a week ago. I really like it. It is a little larger than I wanted but it has 4 AA batteries which I like. Easy to use and takes very good pictures. I'm not a photographer and won't be entering any contests. I just wanted a good all around digital camera and one I could take some good zoom wildlife pictures with. It has 16mp. I took some pictures of geese about 300 ft away a few days ago and extremely happy with the results.
I wanted a camera I could carry in my tractor while I was out in the field and not worry about it.

Nikon does make some compact versions that are water proof. A great feature to have if you ever get caught I the rain.. Personally I still prefer my old Sony. It is a bit bigger but I think picture quality is better than anything I have tried so far. Except DD's thousand dollar Nikon DSLR.

The new phones now have amazing cameras, most are 8MP with zoom and many features. I use my phone for everything now and my main big camera when I am in the mood.

I grew tired of buying compact cameras that died due to dust or water. At the time Panasonic had the best rugged camera. The Sony rugged camera was close. I have a DSLR for high quality pics. The Panasonic receives the most use. I no longer worry about the elements. Check out the various rugged cameras.

A useful web site to check out what is available is dpreview. They include customer reviews & ratings, a "Compare" section and a "Camera Feature Search" section, all under the Camera menu. A great way to help you decide what meets your needs.

The newer "smart" phones have camera funtions that can satisfy most people. I have a Nikon D60 SLSR with two lenses and a powerful supplimental flash that can bounce light off of the ceiling for more natural photos. I really like my Nikon but the simple cell phone is always in my pocket and available. The cell phone "snap shots" are as good as those from the Nikon, so why bother getting out the Nikon for routine photos?
