I have a portable air tank which holds appx 100 psi of air. I assumed, if tank was full of air, it would inflate a low tire to 50 psi, but when I put it on the tire it seems to do nothing. I thought if I had ....say 70 lbs in the tank...a my tire was only 45 lbs...it would use 5 lbs ...so down to 65..and the inflated tire now up to 50. But does not seem to work like that...what am I missing.

You should have one reading that shows pressure and another that controls maximum amount of delivery, at least mine does. You have to make sure your relief/setting valve knob is turned to the amount that you want to establish.

Sounds confusing--bottom line, it needs to be set above 50 if you want more than 50 in it...mine is designed to cut off at whatever I have it set at, essentially eliminating need for tire gauge....in theory..

Your theory is correct. They do work that way. Your problem is in the valves. There is probably a small twist valve that needs to be opened to release the air. Good luck.

Why not consider a small air compressor. You can get one locally on sale for about $50. I used a tank for awhile and it became more of a problem than it was worth.

Don't know about yours, but mine is like noted above. It has a small valve where the hose comes out of the tank that must be opened before air can flow out.
Generally good for a few pounds in one, maybe two, tires before the pressure is too low to do much good.

Don't forget to take into account volume. Just because you have 100psi in a small can doesn't mean you can fill a truck tire etc.

I, too, go with the volume theory. JMHO

First thing is the shut-off valve needs to be open. It's often a small needle valve on those tanks. Make sure you're turning it the correct way to open it as they're not always righty-tighty lefty-loosey valves.

Second is the pressure issue. The greater the pressure difference, the faster the two 'tanks' will try to equalize. That means that if the first tire uses a lot of air and only leaves 65psi in the tank, the air isn't going to be moving as fast when connected to a 45psi tire.

You beat me to it DTD. If you have a really small tank and a really big tire what your trying to do won't work; or at least won't work like you think it will.
The big tire will take the pressure off of that small tank really fast. You might only get 5 PSI in the tire before the pressures equalize.

That being said, you should be able to get some air in the tire before it equalizes.

I have found that the cheap Chinese air chucks that come on these tanks are usually garbage. They often don't work at all.

First, check to make sure you've opened the valve on the tank.

Second, suspect a faulty air chuck.

Third, things "kinda" work like you think, but not exactly. If you add 5PSI to a tire out of tank pumped to 100PSI, it may or may not read 95PSI at the end. You're missing the air volume factor.
