Yesterday I was very surprised at what I read on a sticker on the tonque of my Jayco X23J. This sticker stated that towing this trailer with a tow vehicle rated at one ton or more could result in injury or death.

I have never heard of such a thing. Does anyone know the logic behind this statement?

Where exactly on the tongue is this sticker at? Because.....well....just look.

Yep - a brand new X23J being towed by a GMC3500HD Duramax. In the 7 months I've had the trailer, I've towed it easily 4000 miles so far. I've been over my own trailer pretty well and don't recall seeing that sticker on mine....that's why I ask.

The sticker guy was sleeping the day they built yours.

My 2010 Jayco 17Z has the same sticker on the tongue. I was thinking that maybe too much power could damage the tongue if you took off too fast? Maybe the frames are only rated for so much yank on them?

Many 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton trucks have the same power plants as a 1 ton. 6.0 chevy motors are in 1/2, 3/4 and 1 ton. The same with the hemi and 5.4 ford. The most powerful diesels in 3/4 tons are the exact same engine as 1 tons.

I think it has to do with the stiff rear suspension. My jayco 218 doesnt even have enough tongue weight to make my old 77 1 ton ride nice.

Here is the sticker:

It is located on the curb side of the tongue under the battery.

It looks like a one ton TV is OK but not MORE than one ton.

Thanks for the photo. Only 3 of 4 make sense to me.

Notice how all of those warnings seem to be tangentially related to the strength of the frame? My guess is that a heavier duty truck's stiffer rear suspension may transmit more bouncy-load forces to the tongue. The additional force transmitted to the tongue (instead of being absorbed by the truck's suspension) could cause issues with frame failure.

That would be my guess anyways...

I lost the fuel pump in my Envoy last year, DB let me borrow his 3/4 ton D/A for the weekend to go camping. I didn't even bother with the WD bars, it towed just fine.

I think number 2 actually ment to say Do not tow this trailer with a truck or van rated at more than one ton in tongue weight.

My guess is that someone has seriously overloaded the tongue, cracked the trailer frame, and won some portion of a lawsuit.

The sad part is they've now opened themselves up to a lawsuit by some idiot trying to tow the trailer with a mini crossover rated at one ton towing capacity. I hate idiot stickers and the lawyers who cause them.
