NC also requires only the rear plate. For our front, we attached our old U.S. Virgin Islands tag from our years living on St. Croix.
Gets a fair amount of puzzled glances. When people mention it, Spouse likes to say the tunnel is faster but the bridge is cheaper.

Kids do all the ice breaking for us. Nothing like a 2 year old girl with her bright blonde hair in two piggie tails to make the neighbors start up a conversation. Heck, if they don't talk, she will sure start talking *at* them. That being said, at last weekends' campground, when we arrived the little miss was loudly making it known that she was done... DONE with riding in the truck. I overheard the neighbor's thoughts on the matter "Oh dear God they have a freakin' baby! This weekend is going to suck". Dismayed, I later noticed he himself had 3 kids in his crew. Guess they were all born at school age. Normally parents with younger kids bond over the "been-there-done-that" sympathy and give each other a little extra good vibes.

I just walk up and say Hey Neighbor, introduce myself and if I think I may like them invite them to enjoy our fire later with an adult beverage or smores.

The large "cage" for the cats hanging from our TT's bedroom window gets plenty of conversations going. People walk up and ask if we have birds. If the cats are out in it (they come and go through the window) they ask about the cats or where we got the cage etc. It's been the biggest ice breaker I ever had.

I'm another guy who "sucks at small talk". I'm not unfriendly or snobby, just don't have "people skills", guess too many years working solo. Don't enjoy football/basketball/baseball/ball of any kind, so when conversation turns to ball I feel like a third wheel.
