My DW had one knee replaced last July at 75 on a Mon. On Sunday she used a cane to go to Church and that was the last time she used any support. The PT came to the house 2 times and she was discharged.
As a side note do you know what they call the person who graduated at the bottom of their med school class?

WOW! That's unbelievable! I had a PT come out for 6 visits before I was able to go out to PT where I had another 12 visits. It was several weeks before the knee would bend more then 45 degrees. I've never heard of so little rehab.
The same surgeon replaced both knees. The left knee will be two years this coming Aug the right March 12, for the first surgery I had the stocking and four years ago when I had my right hip replaced I had the stockings. This time no stockings. i asked the surgeon why no stockings, andswer, "did a study and found absolutly no differenct between control group with the stockings and the test group without the stockings. Some Drs at Kaiser swear by them and some don't prescribe them All patients swear at them.
When the PT came to the house the first time it was about ten days after the surgery. I went to the door to let him in and after following me into the living room he asked "who was the patient". He didn't want to come back for a second visit, two days later is when the problems started and the hematoma covered the back of my leg from the top of my theigh to my toes and my leg swoll up and was almost twice its normal size. At ER they did ultrasound, and like I posted saw my srugeon and my Family medice DR and they could give no reason or cure except to stay seated or laying down with the leg above my heart.
Try that for about four weeks while your'e refurbishing your S&B and have contractors coming to make bids and do work.
I didn't have any pain until the hematoma and swelling, now I am taking 4 to 8 vicodin a day(under close observation by my family care Dr) and wake up several times a night with severe pain Usually about 04:00 I take two vicodin, thats after two about 11:30 or mid-night.
By Friday I we will have almost all the exterior work done on the house and are taking off for the Grand Canyon for the Annual GC Association gettogether, we taking the four wheeler and staying at the lodge because I can't be sure I can drive the MoHo that far and set up and break down camp.
If I'm not better by a week from Monday I'm going to the ER and raise heack untill someone finds out what is wrong with my knee. By the way, the knee doesn't hurt, the new joint is fine, it's mussle and skin and tendons that hurt. Knee and area around the knee are red, hot and swollen. Why don't Dr's listen to patients? By reviewing my medical recors(we have online access to most of it back to about 2000) my wife and I discovered that a problem I used to have regarding a persistant dry cough was cause by asperating nasal drainage in my sleep and that was agravated by my CPAP machine. Use Zertex D for allergies and stopped the CPAP. Cough gone. Dr's prescribed two short term usage Rx for GERDs, turned out I had a new test done and it showed that there was absolutly no evidence of GERDs but now I have dry tremors as a result of one of the meds. I kept telling the Drs, that the problem was caused by my allergies, I have over sixty years of living with them, but their resent studies showed that lots of people have GERDs and don't know it.
Now it turns out that I have two different types of cancer, neither is normally life threatening but I'm not too sure I want to follow the active surveilence for one and out patient removal for the other. I want to be with immediate medical care available at the push of a button after the surgery and I really want removal of the other one too.
Well I sorta got that off my chest, maybe the general contractor will show up tomorrow and get our deck finished so we can have the house appraised for a refinacing and get some more gas money to take the Grandkids on a road trip later this summer.

sbishop, you have good reason to rant so go for it. We all feel better when we can get stuff off our chest, vent on!!! I just hope you stay on top of things, these doctors don't know everything.
I had a doctor with my HMO who had me go through 2 operations on my knee only to tell me the operation was a success, but the patient died...me, being the patient wasn't very happy with the diagnosis. He then wanted me to get a second opinion. I changed my insurance to a PPO(fortunate to have been able to do this)got a new doc who immediately said, your knee is shot, need a replacement now. In fact both my knees needed replaced, so far 1 is done. I had 3 operations in 13 months, and 3 different years.
My Dad developed cellulitis in his knee after a knee replacement. It was red, hot, swollen and painful. Antibiotics were used to treat it. Doctor was real vague about the cause, but I have had it and it was caused by bacteria introduced into an open wound.

Well here's the latest, the surgeon reluctantly said I might try compression stockings to help reduce the swelling. He wasn't really in favor but that I could try that. PT said follow surgeons recommendation, GP was no help. I finally told the DW that I wanted to try the stockings and to get me a couple of pairs before we left for the Grand Canyon. She felt I should have thigh high stockings and wasn't happy with knee highs which is why she never bought any earlier. She got two different brands for me. I put them on the morning we left for the canyon, took my two Norco's and off we went. It's a 10 hour drive and anything more than two hours was torture so I wan't looking forward to 10 hrs. By the time we got to Barstow (over two hours) and we stopped for another cup of coffee and a sandwich I realized my knee didn't hurt, fine wwhen we got to Kingman, fine at Williams and fine by the time we got to the park and spent three or four hours at the meet and greet for members of the GC Association. Got to room, took of my pants and the stockings and my feet looked normal and the swelling in the leg was way down. Things have gotten better but still using the stockings, it's been 10 days so far and I'm pretty happy. I am still limitted in duration on my feet and in climbing stairs but a vast improvement. Talked to Surgeon about the TED stockings after surgery, he said the benifit of using them did not outweigh the problems caused when they were improperly worn and skin leigions occurred. He still doesn't recomment them.
yep my doc said i waz a good one for lower knee replacement
i said ok set it up---he said u sure. i said yep, i have no other choice, if i want to be able to move around.he said well u could try these pills, i said ok, been useing the pills for bout 15years. been good for me. now the ice thing also work good too. and moveing around too, dragging it around --too --happy-camping
It's interesting talking to those that have had a TKR, no two recovery procedures are the same. Some with socks, some not. Some with the machine that moves the knee others without, some with hours of icing, others without. I guess this is why they call it "practicing" medicine.
I'm glad to hear something as simple as the socks worked so well for you.
