I bought a dash mounted barometric altimeter that has a compass and thermometer included. In mounting it I just noticed a sliding pad on the back with a red light that comes on when you push a button on the totally separate pad. It did not come with instructions and I cant find where I found it on the net?? I bought two , one for the coach and one for the towed. It came in handy when we were climbing out over mount Shasta on the Five this spring.
But what is with the pad and red light?

Red light sounds to me like a map reading light. Red light is best for night reading.

Why not use your GPS? Much more accurate than air pressure.

I want a constant look at altitude and do not want to have to mess with my GPS and besides it is my toy!I will use the GPS for altimeter setting when I am stopped . Perhaps the lite is for map reading but it really tiny and sheds no light.
I just found a phone number to call manana and will report back for those who are!

The only "messing" I have to do is touch the signal strength meter and voila.. constant altitude reading accurate to about 10'. perhaps yours does not work that way.

Have you tried googling for the maker's website? It should have either instructions or a good write up of the features, or both. Of course, if it's made in the Orient, the 'English' may require some reading between the lines (but I doubt my Chinese would be half as good  ).

Swartz was right It is a very small map light. The rep on the phone said it is the sixth feature of the gadget. When sitting in one spot for awhile, a monitor of your altitude rising -- atmospheric pressure lowering and bad weather or conversely altitude lowering - high pressure system approaching and good weather. I guess I am enamored with the old basic analogue systems!

While you can use your new altimeter as a basic barometer, you will need the current barometric pressure for it to give you an accurate reading of altitude above sea level.
And as barometric pressures constantly change, you will need to update it accordingly.
