We have the AL-KO axles... I had not used the Ultra Lube feature --- so I can only imagine it was done at the factory. When I pulled my hubs to clean/repack and replace seals... 2 of the 4 axles had grease weepage past the seals. I will continue to just repack them by hand every 10,000 miles...

I have the EZ lube's on my trailer, never use them. The previous owner obviously did based on the grease all over the brakes. Maybe he did it incorrectly, maybe a seal failure, I don't care. Never saw the sense in blindly pumping grease into the hub hoping it gets to the bearings. What are you trying to accomplish? Saving a little time? Even Dexter recommends pulling the hubs periodically to inspect the bearings and brakes. I think that pulling the hubs every two years is just part of required maintenance and piece of mind in knowing all is well.

Have used my E-Z Lubes for five years now. No problems.

Most boats use the bearing buddy system. Very different than the EZ Lube. My bearing buddy system on my boat worked without problems. When I inspected my brakes on my new 5th wheel trailer after having problems setting up my brake controller I found two wheels where the seals had failed. I prefer to just remove the drums inspect the brakes and pack the bearings by hand and install new seals.

I have the Ultralube on my less than one year old trailer. The brakes felt funny so I pulled the drums. One leaked enough to lube the linings, one had a slight leak. Two were OK. I think I shall hand pack after this.

When I have used a trigger grease gun I use a couple of pulls. One question, if grease is getting to bearing shoud there be some resistance when applying the grease after a coule of squirts.

I found out something a little different. My trailer is going on it's fourth season so I decided to pull the wheels and repack the bearings. In the past I have just greased them per Dexter's instructions.

All the wheel seals were fine, none leaked but one of the outboard bearings showed some scuffing and maybe a little pitting. I replace both the inner and outer races. As I was doing this my son came over and we started talking about it. When I got to thinking about it, I remember the preload on that one axle was very tight. Dexter gives some pretty specific instructions about setting preload and this one was too tight.

Bottom line is that I think out of the gate on a new trailer I would pull the wheels and check the bearings, preload and make sure they are greased. Then I would use the EZ Lube feature. If I hadn't checked mine this year it would probably have failed sooner or later.

I rest my case. If you had pulled the wheels for greasing and not used the EZ lube you may have found your problem years ago. I also like to look at the brakes and make sure nothing has gone wrong there.

There you have it. The system works, but humans do the assembly. Then we have delivery from factory to the dealer. Depending, on the delivery driver's skill and TV, the new trailer brakes could have been overheated and well worn before the new unit even hits the lot.

Mine have worked fine. EZ Lube has been around for a while, my 5th wheel was manufactured in 2004 and has them. I think if they were as troublesome as some claim on here, EZ Lube would be a thing of the past. However, I do believe if the correct EZ lube double lip grease seal is replaced with a single lip seal from NAPA or some other type outlet that sells will-fit seals by size, then it could very well result in greased brakes.

Single lip seals keeps contaminants out of the hub.
Double lip seals keep grease in, and contaminants out. IMO. Jack

Bingo!!!!!
Give this man an award. Even trailer places don't sell the correct seal. Mine didn't leak grease onto the brakes until the seals were 6 years old. Use the correct seals, grease per instructions to the letter, and replace the seals every three years and you won't have any problems.

I still take them apart every other year to inspect.
