Also, campground ideas w. hookups at these sites. Thanks.

Based on having tried them, I can't recommend the 610 loop over going through downtown, I can't recommend Beltway 8 around the NE side, and I can't recommend anything that puts you on FM-1960. Around the north of Houston, dense suburban traffic runs more than 30 miles out from downtown, and the "back" roads are a lot more tangled with traffic than the freeways.

To bypass the major cities in Texas, you have to bypass them by quite a bit, living for the thirty mile commute seems to be a norm. You might try Texas 105 out of Beaumont across to Conroe, then down I-45 to The Woodlands. I haven't tried this one, and keep in mind that Conroe is still in the suburban commuting zone, traffic on I-45 is already dense most of the day, but you are going to The Woodlands, that's in the middle of the biggest traffic mess on the north side.

Houston traffic actually tends to go more smoothly as you move toward the centers from the beltways and loops where all the subdivisions and malls are located.

I always run 105 between Beaumont and Conroe when in that area north of Houston. Conroe is still some distance above The Woodlands, though, so maybe at Cleveland take 59 down to 242 to get there.

I'd avoid rush hour traffic anywhere near I-45. And if they have heavy rains around the time you get there it could be a real fun time. They use road under passes to collect water for use during the dry spells.

On 105 west of Conroe about 10 miles there is a KOA on the south side of the road near Lake Conroe. A really nice campground and in a great area. I'd much rather bum around there than down in the congestion of The Woodlands. But then the shopping is better at The Woodlands.

Getting about in Texas is pretty easy. Any road you see on a Texas map will be excellent traveling. I just draw a straight line between the two places I want to travel between and then follow all the Farm to Market roads along the way to get there.

Howdy!

I would suggest staying out of the high traffic times early morning and evening. Drive through using 610 loop. As for a RV park look at this one Rayford Crossing RV Park

Just plan for traffic any time you're around Houston. It will help you avoid disappointment. If you can make the trip on a weekend, that might help. Or in the middle of the night.

I-10 west of Lafayette isn't exactly a picnic either. You shouldn't hit traffic unless there's a wreck or construction, but unless something has changed recently, the road is incredibly bad. We've never traveled with our trailer over there, but it's noticably bumpy in a regular car. Our kids hate traveling on most of I-10 through LA because the bumps are so bad the DVD player starts over at the beginning about every 5 minutes or so. We always have to do something else for entertainment.

I'm full of good news and cheer, aren't I?

You must not have be on I-10 in a few years. Almost everything West of Lafayette has been rebuilt and is very nice. Just a section of a couple miles from the Lake Charles bridge and even some of that has been repaired this year. Also still a bad section East of Lafayette.

Headed to Montana next month from Orange, Texas. I will be taking I-10 to Beaumont and then take Hwy 90 to the Beltway 8. Almost no traffic from Beaumont to Barrett. I take this route by car to visit friends in Crosby. 1960 between Huffman and I-45 is usually a nightmare.

I can not find out how to handle tolls on the Beltway 8. There are no manned toll booths on the north east side. Been told they will snap the license plate and sent me a bill with a small up charge. Also been told that I should exit off Beltway 8 prior to the cameras and get on the feeder roads. Feeder roads are almost all 2 lanes and in good shape..

Now sure how I will handle that.

Do not run through the toll booths. There is a major fine. The feeder roads should have less traffic since the beltway will take a lot of it. Someone posted on this subject this past Month and had a link to the Toll site.

I have run I10 from Florida Panhandle to/from New Mexico a bunch of times the past few years. Most of the road is very smooth now. Used to be a bone shaker. Don't make the mistake of I10 thru New Orleans. Take the I12 bypass. Houston is a pain but I time my day so I hit it after the morning rush and before the pm rush or late evening. Straight thru town on I10 is by far the fastest most direct route. Just pay attention to the lane you need to be in.

Order is illusion. Chaos is reality. But right or wrong I'm still the captain.
