If you get the book Exit Now, or Next Exit, both good resources, they will show you the fuel stops that have wide access for RV's.

Sorry I couldn't put a link to it - problems.

We drive secondary roads - red roads on the maps - almost exclusively and have never had a problem with clearances. We wouldn't try it on the "black" map roads.

Have fun!

Thank you. This website is very helpful. As a matter of fact there is an overpass on I-95 in Jacksonville listed as 8'6". WOW! That would ruin someones day.

There's a webcam-equipped railroad bridge in Durham, N.C. that's so famous for vehicle decapitations it's got its own website!

Huh? That's hard to believe. Millions of snowbird RVers travel I-95.

There is really nothing on the internet that will properly route an RV - in addition to low clearances you need to be concerned about roads that do not permit RVs, tunnels and bridges with restrictions on carrying propane, etc. We were suggested to use a Trucker's Atlas (actually called motor carrier's atlas). We looked at one and other than charts in the front, there was nothing on the maps themselves. I have not seen the RV atlas that was suggested but if it really does highlight allowable routes that would be great. Rand McNally and Magellan both make RV specific GPS units and these will do exactly what you are looking for. I have searched the internet for some web-based equivalent have not found one. I live in an area where low overpasses are the norm and not the exception and anyone traveling here that does not know the area would get in a lot of problems in their RV. The RV specific GPS is the way to go!

Yep, I have both the RV Atlas and the Magellan 7 inch screen that Camper World sells. So far they have been totally reliable, but talking to folks with local knowledge (like on here) is still a darn good idea. Have to chuckle about the 8' I95 clearance in Jacksonville that somebody posted. Millions of 18 wheelers would be topless let alone RVs. I have an older small Magellan in my car that has taken me down local roads that turned into dirt roads and dead ends, haha. Wouldn't want that to happen in my motor home!

I thought it was wierd also to have such a low clearance. Here is what is posted on the AITA Web site for low clearances in Florida...this is just one of the six or seven areas, The others seem more "normal"

Palm Ave Jacksonville- I-95 overpass 8'6"

OK..I was on YouTube the other day and stumbled across the greatest thing ever! Go to lowclearances.com. For only $15 you can download over 3500 listed low clearances across the country. Lifetime membership is inlcuded. I installed the POI download to my Tom Tom. You set the GPS then to alert you whenever a low clearance is ahead on your route. You choose to set the restricted height warnings yourself. Going to try it out this weekend for the first time. It actually looks pretty cool. Check it out. So far I have a little better peace of mind.

The listing appears to be correct. Several reputable sources list the clearance on Palm Ave where it passes under the I-95 overpass as 8'6".

Of course, to put it in perspective, this would be important only if you were traveling on Palm Avenue in Jacksonville, FL. It would mean nothing if you were traveling on I-95.
