I know you were looking for further south, but have you heard of Fort Fisher, NC (AF Recreation facility)?

We also recommend the US Military Campgrounds website--great source of information.

We used www.militarycampgrounds.com and traveled from VA to Key West and back, using military CGs all the way. The ones at Fort Bragg and Fort Stewart are okay. The Navy facility at Mayport is excellent, as is the Air Force facility at Cocoa Beach, and we can't say enough good things about NAS Key West.

Patrick AFB famcamp has a tent area.
One we really like is at St Mary's GA (the Submarine Base). Not sure if they have tent sites.

Thank you for all those who replied to my post. I am surprised at the many other options out there to camp, like the military bases, and beyond KOA, which we have used a few times in the past. I want to find out more info on National Forest camping someone mentioned as well.

There is a nice campground on Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama city, Fl. There is also a nice campground off Eglin Air Force Base in the Destin, Florida Area. Hope this helps.

I can't recall the name of this campground.. because I was more interested in finding a service road nearby for some off roading, But this military campground is located in West Virginia right by the Gorge.. maybe someone else will know of this better then I.

Interesting thread that has expanded my knowledge and I'll continue to read even though I've nothing to add to the conversation.
