So I assume that means my grandfathered plan is going to be null and void. Meaning my new 4G smart phone plan is going to expire when that happens? If so I guess we will be switching to T-Mobile or Sprint this summer and they can have my 4G phone back.

Although I don't like it, I don't know where "forked tongue" comes from.
The unlimited plans come from 3G customers. Verizon has allowed 3G customers to upgrade to 4G and keep their unlimited plans. However, they have always stated that could change this policy. I read that "could" to mean "would" at some time in the future.
As these 3G unlimited data plan customers migrate to 4G LTE, they will have to purchase the company's data-share plan (which Verizon plans to launch in mid-summer) and move off the $30 per month unlimited data plan. "Everyone will be on data share," Shammo said. Verizon Communications CFO Fran Shammo
I haven't seen a statement about those who choose to stay with 3G or about those that have already switched to 4G.
Tom, .. "forked tongues" was intended as a slam to Verizon for telling me from the very beginning the data plan used for my air card as "unlimited forever". I opened that account in 2006 and have kept it only because they reassured me many times it would remain unlimited. I know they changed the language in data plans with a disclaimer of changing it sometime in the future, .. but that was well after I started the plan an was guaranteed grandfather status.
I'm well aware how nothing stays the same and virtually nothing can last forever, ... and I'll go with the flow. It's just that it's difficult to believe anything a carrier tells us anymore. Added th this they seem to make as many changes on the fly as they like and we just have to choke them down, .. like it or not.
I'm only hoping what I sign up for lasts the term of my contract.
Will I keep them? Sure I will, and like you I won't like it.

I also have a Verizon (3G) air card and I am grandfathered into an unlimited plan. As long as I stay with the 3G card and Verizon keeps me on an unlimited plan, I don't see that they have misled me. I saw nothing in their announcement that say grandfathered accounts would be changed, while they still kept their 3G cards. It did say that, when they migrate to 4G, they will lose their grandfathered status. That doesn't break their "promise" to me, they never promised me a 4G unlimited plan.
None of us likes to pay more than we've been paying but somebody has to. If everyone were just checking email or finding out where the nearest restaurant is, we probably wouldn't see these increases. But more and more people are streaming videos and movies, live sports events, etc. To provide that type of service, there's a lot of infrastructure that needs to be upgraded and that costs money.
Remember when hospital rooms had 'pay as you go' TV sets? You put a quarter in and got x number of minutes. When it ran out, you either put another quarter in or read a book. I wish the cell carriers would bill in a similar manner. If I use 2MB of data checking email I get charged for 2MB. If I want to watch 10 movies and 5 ball games, I pay for however many GB that is.
As far as I'm concerned, unlimited plans just encourage people to 'abuse' bandwidth because they paid for it. Like campers who leave the AC running with doors and windows open because they paid for the site, with utilities included.

If you take the time to read the terms & conditions of the service from ANY wireless carrier, it won't take you long to find the clause where they reserve the right to change those terms as they deem necessary.
For some reason, we users take offense when our cellular carrier tries to change the price or terms of our service. However, when any other utility changes pricing, like cable, electric, or landline phone service, it's nothing unexpected.
Unfortunately, the popularity of smartphones and tablets, which use lots of data, has exploded at a rate that has exceeded the ability of the carriers to provide adequate bandwidth. If they don't do something to throttle back the heaviest of users, the whole system will come to a grinding halt. They need to slow the use of data, while they upgrade their network bandwidth. Lack of available spectrum does not help the cause. Here in Boston, trying to use my iPhone while sitting in Fenway Park during a Red Sox game is just a waste of time. There are way more demands on the network than AT&T can service and nobody gets anything......

I'll go back and re-read the announcement. At first blush it appeared they are moving everyone from the 3G plan to 4G. That's part of what hit a nerve with me.
Thanks for pointing this out. It's almost to the point we need a legal staff to interpret the everyday changes.
I sure do enjoy being connected, but it sure is hard to keep up with daily announcements and how we as individuals are effected.
i have a Verizon Mifi hat i just switched to from a net-book. The Mifi gets 4g and my plan didnt change because we couldn't get the unlimited data on the Net book when we got it. What disapoints me is the fact my Iphone is not 4G compatible and will need replaced once the switch is done... Wait no that's not a bad thing that means i get a new toy...

No they never promised you a 4G plan, but it appears they are going to force you into it. Am I reading this wrong? Quote The way it will likely work is that as 3G unlimited contracts expire, Verizon will push subscribers to upgrade their devices to smartphones on company's 4G LTE network. These customers will then have to sign up for the data share plans. It sure sounds like they aren't going to let you keep the 3G.
