I just bought a 2008 F350 6.4 diesel and I am going on a 500 mile trip tomorrow, so I checked my oil. The oil is really clean but seems to be on the top of the dipstick. I just bought the truck so I haven't done an oil change myself yet so I don't know if the level is high or normal for this truck. How much oil is to much?

Really? Ford doesn't put a "Fill to here" line on their dipsticks?

The 6.4L and other DPF equipped diesels tend to "make oil" as part of the regen process. Do some searching on google.

If it is at the top of the plastic bubble can it damage the engine?

Can you clarify "top of the distick" a little better! I can only assume that you mean the oil level is at the top of the hatch mark on the dipstick which is ok. If the oil is over the hatch mark and you describe the oil being clean it sounds to me the last person who did the oil change added too much oil and is not a result of oil dilution "make oil" like others reported. Again if the oil is over the hatch mark by a large margin I would change the oil and put in the correct amount.

Good luck..

Mine was doing that but it was extreme. i would change the oil and in less than a couple thousand miles the oil would be past the top mark. Long story short the cause was a leaky fuel injector and was replaced under warranty. Now it just increases due to regens which is manageable, but annoying.

The oil level covers the word MAX! It doesn't look to be on the stick. I have done the short stick method so hard to tell. Ford couldn't come up with a better method. I am only concerned because I have to pick up my son from college in the morning. Round trip 500 miles.

Not having seen the newer sticks I am not certain how much extra we are talking about but your owners manual will have all that information in it and show you exactly where it should be.
