I have been using a "bungee cord on mine and have had no problems. Mine has a catch but sometimes unhooks on rough roads thus the bungee. Simple solution to a problem.

I always do the same as well. We do too much challenging off-road travel to leave something like that hanging off the rear. On the other hand, for most folks doing more highway & occasional/milder off-road stuff, collapsing the scissor steps and bungee cording them in place seems to work fine.

when I had them I used a 1" wide piece of poly webbing about a foot long and a fastex buckle to go with it; adjust it once and then when you put stairs up 'click' and done...
when stairs down I just left it fastened to one leg to keep it handy

we also unhook ours and store inside, we have a 3ft step ladder we keep just inside the door for getting in and out while traveling and to reach high compartments on the outside while camping.

Must be that we think differently. We'd never buy a TC that has scissor steps as we have seen so many people fall using them over the years. Several have collapsed when being used also. I actually transported one 52 year old lady to a hospital with her husband along when she fell off their scissor steps. Like I said, there are different thoughts among TC owners and we have owned at least one TC unit constantly since the mid 1960's. Had 8 different ones to date.

That said, if we had ever purchased a TC with scissor steps, I would add a bumper immediately so a normal TC swing up bumper step setup could be had. If an add on bumper was not available, I'd make my own or have one made. They simply bolt on so it's no big deal!

A bumper step eliminates all the worries associated with scissor steps and they are always ready for instant safer usage.

Just our thoughts on the subject...

Back in the day we used a bungee cord. It was too inconvenient (heavy) to put inside the door all the time.

We also put ours inside when not in use. When camped they attach to bracket that is on back side of flip over step. Our door threshold is at min 3' but usually closer to 4' off the ground, camper on the truck. We can use the flip over step but its quite a hike. I could see my 80 year old mom misstepping or falling off but without the scissor steps she couldnt get in - period. We did add an extended handrail as a steady rest. If were not going to set up steps (overnight stop) they'll sit in truck. But due to height of our camper-the scissors steps are a nessisity, climbing in & out dosent need to be an effort, 3rd time hiking up and Im setting up steps.

IF I could get by them without having to fold down for quickie coffee/potti stops Id permanently mount steps. But Id make some kind of hard bracket to secure. I would look at 2 pieces of hinged flat bar, probably bent into hoop that wrapped the steps and mechanically fastend to camper. Maybe steel cables with snap hooks, bungi just to snug or ratchet straps. I dunno-just ideas. Im sure each application would be unique.
Bungie cords are great but do fail or can unhook. Personal thing but I cringe everytime I see a load relying soley on one of them or plastic buckles. I usually bungi everything because they'snug up stuff-but thats after straping or tying down.
